A Brief Reflection on the Past 2 Years

The past couple of years have been the most challenging period of my life so far. I have faced significant financial hardship due to a divorce. I contemplated bankruptcy, feared homelessness, picked up a part-time job, and did my best to minimize spending. But, as of today, I can say with a great deal of confidence: I DID IT. I believe I have overcome this challenge, and I am damn proud of myself for it. I did try (unsuccessfully) to save my home in Westchester County as it was very affordable compared to living in the city, but I was able to find a rent stabilized studio apartment in the city in a great location. And I am immensely relieved that I was able to do so. For months, I was terrified that my credit was not in good enough condition to qualify to rent an apartment on my own. But I was able to recuperate it just enough — and find a broker and landlord flexible enough — to accept my application. A buyer has signed a contract to purchase my existing home, and I believe the housing transition will go as expected at this point. I am incredibly grateful that I have been able to push through this challenge and to those who helped support me through the process. To those facing similar challenges: you can do it. Take it one step at a time. Be persistent. Be resilient. Ask for help when you need it. And, with a little bit of luck, you will be okay.

Through this experience, I have learned to value what I do have and to see so many behaviors as privileges. It is a privilege to have a roof over your head; to go out to restaurants; to travel; to go shopping for non-essentials; to take an Uber; to get drinks at a bar. We take these things for granted too often. I encourage those who do enjoy these privileges to not lose sight of those struggling, to support them, and to give to those less fortunate when you can. It makes a difference and is something I know I will keep in mind from this point on.
