The Evolution of Move with Meaning

From the very beginning, the intention was community.
When I first started shaping this experience, I knew I didn’t want to create another space where people felt pressured to perform, compete, or prove themselves. I wanted people, at every experience level, to walk into class and feel like they belonged.
Pilates was always the anchor. Not as a hard workout to conquer, but as a way to return to the body. To notice breath. To build awareness. To strengthen gently. To reconnect mind and body in a way that felt grounding rather than intimidating.
But movement was never meant to stand alone.
Reflection was always part of the design.
After we moved, we journaled. We discussed. We explored questions that felt real for college students navigating pressure, identity, ambition, and uncertainty:
What does it mean to live purposefully? What does it mean to be “well”? How do we stay intentional in systems that reward constant productivity?
I intentionally centered these conversations around voices like Dr. Thema Bryant’s — integrating psychology, spirituality, and lived experience into our time together.
The snacks were intentional. Sharing food in community was intentional. Journals were intentional; a place to release thoughts without judgment. Stickers were intentional; small acts of personalization and ownership.
Every ritual was designed to slow us down and bring us back to ourselves and to each other.
Then, as I began reading more deeply into liberation psychology, I realized something that gave language to what I had already been building.
Move with Meaning wasn’t just about wellness as an individual responsibility. It was about acknowledging that wellness choices are shaped by systems. Yes, someone chooses to show up to class. But do they have the time to show up consistently? Do they feel safe in their environment? Do they have space to breathe?
Wellness is both personal and systematic.
As someone who has been a student in higher education for nine years and worked within it for four, I have seen firsthand how burnout can quietly become normalized. I’ve seen how students and staff alike struggle to find time for themselves.
Move with Meaning became my response to that reality.
What began as a community-centered Pilates and reflection space is continuing to evolve into something deeper — a holistic wellness experience rooted in physical, emotional, social, and spiritual connection.
I am deeply grateful to ScarletWell for believing in this vision and funding the initiative so it could grow. And I’m equally thankful to Rutgers Recreation for supporting this mission and trusting me to create something that blends movement with meaning.
Move with Meaning continues to evolve.
And so do I.
