Did You Know… High Heels Were Originally Made for Men?

Today, high heels are often seen as a symbol of feminine style. But surprisingly, they were originally designed for men — specifically for warriors.

Around the 10th century in Persia, cavalry soldiers wore shoes with raised heels to help secure their feet in stirrups while riding horses. The heel helped them stay stable when standing in the saddle to fight or shoot arrows. In other words, heels were not about fashion at all — they were about battlefield practicality.

Centuries later, the style made its way to Europe and became popular among aristocratic men. One of the biggest fans was Louis XIV, the famous 17th-century French king. Known for his love of luxury and power displays, he wore high heels with red soles to signal status and authority. At his court, wearing heels became a sign of wealth and prestige.

But fashion eventually took an unexpected turn. By the 18th century, women began adopting high heels as part of their own style. As the trend grew among women, men gradually abandoned it, and heels slowly became associated with women’s fashion instead of masculine power.

It’s a strange twist of history: what began as practical footwear for soldiers and kings eventually evolved into one of the most recognizable elements of modern fashion.
