Hi, for this edition, I am combining both Tuesday and Wednesday (28/4/26 and 29/4/26 in one whole article.

1. “ Seven Prisoners Convicted of Major Offences Have Their Sentences Upheld” By The Federal Court.

Seven prisoners convicted of various major offences committed during their youth have been rejected of their bid to receive leave in a full review of their indefinite detention and have their sentences upheld at the behest of the ruler.

A five-man bench with a roster that includes our Chief Justice Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh and the Chief Justice of Sabah and Sarawak Datuk Azizah Nawawi as well as renowned Federal Court judges Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali and Datuk Rhodzariah Bujang.

A unanimous decision had been reached by the bench that no special circumstances be conferred to the applicants (the 7 prisoners) and that the applicant’s right under Article 5( right to life) and Article 8 (equality before the law and equal protection) of the Federal Constitution had not been violated.

Justice Sequerah further explained that Section 97 of the Child Act 2001 has mandated that child offenders convicted of serious crimes, namely murder, drug trafficking and kidnapping, shall be detained at the pleasure of YDPA ( Yang di-pertuan Agong), YDPN ( Yang di-Pertua Negeri) and such detention is lawfully recognised as valid custody under the law. He added that additional remedies remain available to the applicants including Section 97(4) of the Child Act 2001, Regulations 54 and 113 of the Prison Regulations 2000, and Power of the Pardon under Article 42 of the Federal Consitution gives a chance to the prisoners for early release by way of the Board of Visiting Justices’ early recommendations.

These seven prisoners aged between 27 and 36 were convicted of murder, kidnapping and drug trafficking offences commited during their teenage years. Therefore, instead of being mandated to the death penalty, they have instead been detained at the pleasure of the Ruler.

2. “Is the Malaccan Strait being considered the next global trade flashpoint amidst several economic ripples”?

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz in light of tensions in the Gulf have caused a chained reaction in global trade shipping as ships continue to line up in the Gulf of Oman and the Persion Gulf. This leaves the Strait of Malacca, one of the busiest trade routes in the world especially vulnerable. Indonesia has proposed of transit tolls in the Malaccan Strait which was swiftly rejected by both the Singaporean and Malaysian governments. The Malaccan Strait has faced logistical problems as a result as it could become a prime battleground for its power ports like Port Klang and Port of Singapore that could escalate tensions and cause major disruptions in trade across ASEAN nations and even the global trade market. As for now, there is no clear indication that growing tensions amongst several countries who cause ripple effects in the Malaccan strait yet our governments must be wary on the consequences amongst key competitive markets such as trade relations with global powerhouses like China can could be severly affected by tensions surrounding the control of the Strait of Malacca.

3. “ An Impending Fleet of EV Vehicles Welcomed as Government Vehicles.

Our government is gearing up to switch to EVs ( Electronic Vehicles) as a cost-cutting strategy by supplementing EV adoption with adequate charging facilities necessitated before any wider uptake to take place. The government stance on EVs have always been that any citizen who wants to use EVs, they are welcomed to so and car manufacturers that want to produce EVs in our nation are also welcomed but must be subjected to certain tax exemptions asserted and imposed by the Transport Ministry.

3. “UAE’S Shocking Exit from the OPEC And OPEC+ leaves a Historic Energy Shock Amidst Global Tensions in the Middle East”.

The UAE have called it quits on OPEC ( Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, which purpose is to deal with co-leading mass oil productions in several countries to maximise profits and influence global oil markets) and OPEC+.

This stunning loss could ultimately weaken and collapse OPEC, which has historically proposed a united front on dealing with key oil markets despite multiple geopoltical disputes in pursuit of maximising oil profits

OPEC have already struggled with exporting through the passage way of the Strait of Hormuz as a result of the Middle East conflict. However, for US President Donald J. Trump, he sees this as a huge positive as he has accused OPEC of ripping the whole world by controlling and inflating oil prices.

The exit came after the Emirates, a regional business hub and of the State’s most crucial ally had chastised its fellow Arab nations for not protecting themselves from Iranian threats during the ongoing conflict and rising tensions in the Middle East.

5. “Our Travel Segment ( Local Wonders of Malaysia) : The Amazing Beauty of Seberang Perai”

Seberang Perai is being touted as a hotspot destination for travellers in both the domestic realm as well as international visitors. The mainland has many hidden gems from historic sites to natural wonders, rural attractions and cultural enclaves.
