Following the acquisition of Covidien in 2015, Medtronic became the worldโ€™s largest medical device company by revenue. Today, the company has a market capitalization of over $120 billion and a global workforce of over 90,000.

Under CEO Geoff Marthaโ€™s leadership, Medtronic generates over $33 billion in annual revenue, split across the following four main segments:

1- Cardiovascular (37%), 2- Neuroscience (29%), 3- Medical Surgical (25%), 4- Diabetes (8%).

Under Skip Kiilโ€™s leadership, Medtronicโ€™s Cardiovascular segment generates $12.5 billion in annual revenue, focusing on

  • Cardiac Rhythm & Heart Failure ($6.4B),
  • Structural Heart & Aortic ($3.6B),
  • Coronary & Peripheral Vascular divisions ($2.5B).

Under Brett Wallโ€™s leadership, Medtronicโ€™s Neuroscience segment generates $9.8 billion in annual revenue, focusing on

  • Cranial & Spinal Technologies ($4.9B),
  • Specialty Therapies ($2.9B),
  • Neuromodulation divisions ($1.9B).

Under Mike Marinaroโ€™s leadership, Medtronicโ€™s Medical Surgical segment generates $8.4 billion in annual revenue, focusing on

  • Surgical & Endoscopy ($6.5B),
  • Acute Care & Monitoring ($1.9B).

Under Que Thanh Dallaraโ€™s leadership, Medtronicโ€™s Diabetes segment generates $2.8 billion in annual revenue, focusing on products and services for the management of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Historically, Medtronic prioritized agility and speed of innovation. This was also evident in its acquisition strategy, which focused mainly on smaller, bolt-on acquisitions aligned with its core competencies. Over time, however, the company shifted its mindset toward scale, stability, and product diversity. This was notably highlighted in its 2015 acquisition of Covidien.

While the move expanded Medtronicโ€™s global footprint, it also introduced significant integration challenges. It slowed its pace of innovation, shifting Medtronic from a first mover to a follower in some of its core businesses. Recognizing this, Medtronic is now working to restore its agility by refocusing on its core businesses and products. The recently announced plan to separate the Diabetes business into a standalone company is a clear step in this direction.
