The telling problem for the Renegades’ batting lineup underscored by Maxwell heroics in yet another Melbourne Derby

Following on from the thriller at the MCG last Saturday, I was once again expecting a masterclass display of bat and ball from both sides, but that was not to be.

Getting traitor Sam Harper dismissed on the first ball and seeing 6/63 etched on the scoreboard after Hilton Cartwright had gotten out in the 10th over, hopes (maybe even a slight sense of hubris) were most certainly high although Maxwell had walked to the crease. While he was consistently performing throughout BBL14, Stoinis wasn’t there to support him, and I was sure that he would be knocked over in a matter of overs.

However, as the runs flooded in and the one-sided partnership with Usama Mir developed, those feelings of vanity, conceit and arrogance soon became the Renegades’ hamartia. With the Stars faithful finding their voice with a decent batting pitch (never before seen at Marvel Stadium), the tide continued to turn their way.

Out for 90, Maxwell’s stellar knock and, overall, his performances throughout the season have displayed his batting wit and sage. When the time is right, and the Stars are in dire need of a partnership, he is ever reliable.

165. The target that would need to be chased for some brushed up egos and bleak faces. Yet, there was a lingering feeling of distrust in this Renegades outfit. We hadn’t been performing to our potential in recent games despite a stacked squad, and it felt as if the Stars would go on for their 4th consecutive win.

And this time, my predictions were right. One wicket and another, and it seemed similar to the 4/10 comeback; Tim Seifert and Will Sutherland were going smoothly, until eventually, they both fell. Melancholic and despondent, I slumped down further into my seat as we bundled out for 123, solidifying the Stars stronghold in Melbourne derbies.

While it was definitely a great social experience, it underscored the tried-and-true nature of the Stars to perform when it matters most, and conversely, the Renegades’ inability to play cricket in big games.

The Renegades go onto play the Hurricanes at Ninja Stadium on Tuesday, requiring a perfect record from here on out to mathematically stay in the hunt for finals. With 4 on the trot, the Stars carry waves of momentum into their next games, they play their last game on Sunday.
