Sometimes the biggest problem with a website isn’t the content, the design, or the features — it’s the few seconds users spend waiting.

Think about the last time a webpage took too long to load. You probably didn’t analyze the technical reason behind it. You simply felt that the website was slow, frustrating, or not worth waiting for.

That small moment of impatience is powerful. It can decide whether a visitor stays, explores the content, or leaves within seconds.

This is what made me curious about Website Performance Analysis using Power BI. I wanted to explore whether website data could reveal patterns that help explain why users stay engaged on some websites while leaving others almost immediately.

The Data Behind the Story

Every website leaves behind a trail of clues.

Page views show how much content users are accessing. Unique visitors provide an idea of the size of the audience. Session duration gives an indication of how long users remain engaged, while bounce rate helps identify visitors who leave without exploring further.

Conversions provide another important perspective: whether visitors actually complete a meaningful action.

For this analysis, I worked with a website analytics dataset containing the following key fields:

  • Date
  • Page Views
  • Unique Visitors
  • Bounce Rate
  • Session Duration
  • Conversions
  • Average Load Time
  • Device Type

Before building the dashboard, I cleaned and prepared the data using Power Query in Power BI. This helped ensure that the data types, values, and fields were properly organized before creating the visualizations.

The goal was not simply to display numbers, but to turn these measurements into a clearer picture of website traffic, user engagement, and performance.

Where the Data Came From

For this project, I used a website performance analytics dataset containing daily records of:

  • Page Views
  • Unique Visitors
  • Bounce Rate
  • Session Duration
  • Conversions
  • Average Load Time
  • Device Type

I created the dataset specifically for this analysis so that the metrics would show realistic relationships between traffic, user engagement, and website speed.

The data was organized in CSV format and imported into Power BI for further analysis and visualization.

Inside the Dashboard

Once the data was organized, the next step was turning it into something that could be understood at a glance.

I didn’t want the dashboard to feel like a crowded collection of charts. Instead, I wanted to create a simple visual space where someone could quickly understand how the website was performing, how users were behaving, and which metrics deserved attention.

How Power BI Helped Me See the Bigger Picture

This project became much more interesting once I started working with Power BI.

Instead of reading rows of numbers, I could explore the data visually through KPI cards, line charts, column charts, pie charts, and scatter plots. Power BI made it easier to compare traffic trends, understand device-wise behavior, and notice how page load time might be connected to bounce rate.

I also used Power Query to clean and prepare the data before creating the dashboard, which helped ensure that the visualizations reflected meaningful patterns rather than inconsistent raw values.

A Quick Look at the Complete Dashboard

The dashboard brings together the main website performance indicators, including traffic, visitors, bounce rate, session duration, conversions, load time, and device distribution.

Having these metrics together makes it easier to move from individual numbers to the bigger picture.

The Dashboard’s First Impression

When I opened the completed dashboard for the first time, the most interesting part was how quickly it summarized the website’s overall performance. the KPI cards provided an immediate snapshot of the main metrics without requiring me to examine individual rows of data.

The key metrics included:

  • Total Page Views
  • Total Unique Visitors
  • Average Bounce Rate
  • Average Session Duration
  • Total Conversions
  • Average Load Time

Seeing these metrics together made it easier to identify which areas deserved further investigation.

It reminded me that a good dashboard doesn’t simply display data — it helps us notice what deserves attention first.

Watching Traffic Come to Life

One part of the dashboard that caught my attention was the traffic trend visualization.

The timeline made it easier to see how page views and visitors changed over time. Some periods had higher traffic, while others were quieter.

More traffic is useful, but it becomes more meaningful when visitors actually stay and engage with the website.

When Visitors Don’t Become Customers

Looking at these two metrics together revealed an important insight: more visitors do not automatically mean more conversions. A website can attract a large audience, but that doesn’t necessarily mean visitors will take the desired action.

Getting people to a website is only the first step. The bigger challenge is turning that traffic into meaningful actions — whether that’s making a purchase, signing up, submitting a form, or engaging with the content.

This comparison helped me understand that website success isn’t only about attracting visitors — it’s about what those visitors do once they arrive.

What Phones Revealed About My Website

I also explored how visitors were distributed across different device types. the dashboard compared Mobile, Desktop, and Tablet users.

This was a useful reminder that website performance needs to be considered across different devices. A website that works well on a desktop may still provide a different experience on mobile.

The Surprising Connection Between Speed and Bounce Rate

The most important analysis was the relationship between average load time and bounce rate. the scatter chart helped me explore whether slower-loading pages were associated with higher bounce rates.

The overall pattern suggested that page speed and user engagement are connected. However, loading time is not the only factor that affects bounce rate. Content, design, navigation, and user intent can also influence whether visitors stay or leave.This showed me that data can reveal patterns, but context is needed to understand them.

Looking Beyond Speed

The dashboard also showed that website performance cannot be measured using a single metric. traffic, engagement, conversions, device usage, load time, and bounce rate all provide different pieces of the story. instead of simply asking “Is the website fast?”, I started asking:

  • Are users staying?
  • Are they engaging?
  • Are they converting?
  • Which devices are they using?
  • Does load time appear to affect engagement?

These questions helped me look at website performance from a more user-focused perspective.

What This Project Taught Me

This project taught me that every metric tells a story — from traffic and bounce rate to load time and conversions. with Power BI and Power Query, I learned that analytics isn’t just about charts; it’s about understanding user behavior through data.

A website succeeds when users don’t just arrive — they choose to stay.
