Oops! My Sensor Almost Burned — But I Learned a Lot

I bought the ELEGOO starter kit (it comes with tons of sensors!) and began working through the tutorials one by one. Then, one day, I had a little incident. While connecting a water level detection sensor to my Arduino, I suddenly smelled something strange. Calmly, I asked Gemini,

“It smells burnt… is that OK?”

And Gemini replied in bold text:

“A burning smell is definitely not OK! Immediately unplug the USB cable from your PC and stop powering the Arduino!”

I panicked and quickly pulled the cable out. That’s when I realized: the metal part of the sensor had gotten really hot. I was almost burned. Later, I found out that I had reversed the 5V and analog input pins. It likely caused a short circuit.

This was my first dangerous mistake with Arduino. When you build a web or smartphone app, you never worry about physical danger. But with electronics, one wrong move can cause heat, damage… or even injury. Honestly, it was scary.

And yet, I feel like this risky mistake was a major turning point. I didn’t just read about the risks — I felt them. I understood the reality of burning out a board or sensor (luckily, nothing was fried this time), and even the potential danger to myself.

After this, I started to understand wiring diagrams and circuit connections on a much deeper level.

Mistakes like this can be frustrating, embarrassing — even dangerous. But I want to welcome them as fuel. Mistakes can become nutrients. They help me grow stronger roots of understanding and creativity — until one day, they bloom into ideas and bear the fruit of original art.
