Real-time payments (RTP) systems are undergoing improvements with significant upside potential. RTP enables the processing of numerous transactions while maintaining strong resilience against fraud. In the US, fraud reports for RTP are significantly lower compared to checks, with one fraud report for every 300,000 RTP transactions versus one for every 32,000 check transactions. While there have been recent incidents in Brazil involving Pix and C&M Software that exposed systemic vulnerabilities and resulted in losses of about USD 310 million, these cases highlight the importance of continuous security enhancements. With strengthened protections, RTP can mitigate such risks and provide users with greater confidence and convenience.
