The Kingdom in a Puddle: A Lesson on Time, Life, and the Worlds We Never See

What if an entire civilization could be born, flourish, dream, and disappear between two of your ordinary days?

A contemplative prose poem exploring the hidden worlds that thrive within a puddle, where creatures measure existence not by years but by rain, reminding us that life, purpose, and time are far larger and stranger than human calendars suggest.

So many lives live large in this puddle.

Those of the ground and air cannot live here. They chart their worth by the rain that pours into it.

There are kings here, free and savants of their kind, savouring the length of their lives like we who imagine that sixty seconds, sixty minutes, twenty-four hours, seven days, twelve months, and four seasons are all there is to a year.

In the fullness of eco-life, they burst and bask and brim with being.

They saw just one day yesterday.

They see just one day today.

They chatter all they have to say with those of wings, bellies, and hoofs who come as shepherds, visitors, predators, companions, and shelter.

The moment they are born, their clocks begin differently from ours.

They live.

They love.

They labour.

They leave.

And all of it happens within the same span of time in which we barely notice the puddle at our feet.

For them, it is a kingdom.

For us, it is a reflective expression.

For life itself, it is another proof that existence has never agreed to be measured by human calendars.

I wrote this piece to challenge the human habit of measuring significance by size, duration, and visibility.

By looking into a simple puddle, I wanted to reveal entire worlds that exist beyond our ordinary perception and invite readers to reconsider what it means to live a full life.

This reflection helps readers develop ecological awareness, humility, and wonder. It encourages us to question our assumptions about time, importance, success, and permanence, through the recognition that every life flips according to a rhythm that is uniquely its own.

This poem is a meditation on perspective, mortality, interconnectedness, and the hidden abundance of existence; it invites readers to see extraordinarily within the ordinary and discover meaning in lives (pecies) vastly different from their own.
