Last October 2018 , Pycon.de & Pydata took place in Karlsruhe. It was followed on the weekend by a Pyladies Berlin hackathon as well as development sprints.

There were too many workshops and talks to go through them all. But thanks to the team all of them were recorded. Below are some takeaways from the 3 keynotes.

Whats does digital mean ?

*From Peter Weibel’s speech, artist, curator, theoretician and CEO of the ZKM**

Lets start with an example :

‘The Treachery of Images’ from Magritte

‘The Treachery of Images’ from Magritte

We see a representation of a pipe, not a pipe. But nowadays you can use an algorithm to translate the data describing the object into some printing instructions.

Thus there is now some reversibility in the relation of a concept to an object thanks do data.

You can re-create the object thanks to its “digital” representation.

Paradigm of open source

From Wes McKinney’s speech, best known for creating the pandas object

Some tools are now used by tens of thousands of people , like pandas . But just a small proportion of people maintain it :

1303 contributors compared to 000+’s of users

1303 contributors compared to 000+’s of users

Open-source is the fuel of passionate people, but as some of the tools become mainstream some questions about their economics will arise.

How documentation should be written ?

From the keynote of Emmanuelle Gouillard’s, researcher as well as a skimage developer

The quality and homogeneity of the documentation is one of the keys of the success of Scikit learn project . All APIs follow the same template thus providing comfort tu users.

Scikit learn’s documentation is fantastic

Knowledge sharing

Last but not least all this would not be possible without the passion and involvement of the organisers, many many thanks to them , as well as the sponsors that also gave their time to make the event possible.
