Every weekend is filled with excitement at school, as I choose something different from the textbook and related matters.

Last Saturday, I chose the topic of struggle. It’s not a topic from any textbook. Not from some famous personality. But from someone close — someone from my own area.

Her name is Sonia. She’s the daughter of a farmer.

Sonia’s father is a farmer and owns a few acres of land. But he is completely dependent on rainwater for the harvest. If there were no rain or irregularity in rain, his crops would be badly affected. Due to a lack of modern technology, the harvest was very minimal. And he could not afford modern technology either. There were many times the family didn’t know if there would be enough food for the next day. They lived hand to mouth. Nothing extra. No savings. Just surviving.

Despite all these, Sonia was a bright girl. She was studying at the neighbourhood school, around three km from her home to the nearest town. She walked every day to school along with two other companions from the village. She loved to go to school, loved learning, and had a dream of becoming a nurse. But dreams are hard to hold onto when life keeps pulling you down.

One year, things got really bad. The crops failed. Her father had to take loans just to buy seeds and food. Her mother had no choice but to work in nearby homes to earn a little extra to help the family run.

Sonia saw the helplessness of her parents. Though she couldn’t do much, she helped her mother in doing the house chores every day. And at school, things weren’t easier either. Students laughed and made fun of her faded uniform, her broken sandals, or the fact that she didn’t have a proper lunchbox — only two dry rotis wrapped in paper.

One day, while returning from school, she was lost in her thoughts, and as she walked through the city lanes, she watched people — rich families in cars, children eating ice cream, shops filled with things she couldn’t afford. And for a moment, she felt like giving up.

“Maybe this is my life,” she thought. “Struggle, poverty, and small dreams or probably a life not worthy of a dream.”

But then, something within her was not ready to give up.

She remembered her father’s hands were rough and tough because of his hard work — and how he never stopped working, no matter how little he earned. She thought of her mother, waking up at 5 AM every day. She would prepare breakfast and do the daily chores at home and walk from house to house just to earn a few rupees.

And she asked herself:

“If my parents are fighting every day for me, no complaints of the difficulties they encounter… How can I give up?”

And this thought changed her mindset and her life.

Sonia decided that even if life was hard, she wouldn’t stop trying; she wouldn’t give up on her dreams. She woke up earlier to study before school. She started helping her mother finish housework so her mother could rest. She even gave free tuition to younger kids in the neighbourhood to revise her own lessons.

She applied for every scholarship she could find. She didn’t care if others made fun of her anymore — because she had found her purpose.

She began to walk with confidence, even when her slippers were torn. She was completely focused and nothing could stop her. She didn’t have much, but she had willpower — and that was enough.

Today, Sonia is doing her nursing course in Bangalore. She still lives a simple life. She works part-time to cover her own expenses. But she’s doing it. She’s chasing her dream. She’s rising, not because she had everything, but because she refused to give up.

So why am I telling you this story?

Because many of us/you — just like Sonia — face struggles. Maybe your family doesn’t have much. Maybe people laugh at your background or the way you dress. Maybe you’ve felt like quitting.

But remember this: You are not defined by what you’ve been through. You are defined by how you rise from it.

You are defined by what you become.

The world will try to label you — poor, weak, unlucky. But your strength, your effort, your courage — that’s what truly matters.

Sonia didn’t have money. She had something greater, something higherß: determination. And that made all the difference.

So when things get hard, I want you to remember her story. When life gets heavy, don’t run away — stand tall/stand firm.

Believe in yourself. Trust your struggle. And rise — just like Sonia.

And always know this: I believe in you. And more importantly, you must believe in yourself.
