Camping holiday celebrating New Year with high school friends in Pinggan, Kintamani

Late in 2025, my high school friends and I finally got a chance to meet up again. One friend who’s studying in Bandung had just finished the semester and came back to Bali for a break. Since it had been a long time since we last saw each other, he invited me and two other friends to go camping in Pinggan, Kintamani.

The plan was pretty spontaneous at first. We only wanted a quiet spot with cool air where we could hang out together. In the end we picked Pinggan because it’s famous for its beautiful views and it seemed like a perfect place to camp.

When we arrived, I was immediately struck by the scenery. From our campsite you could see stretches of fields with green hills in the background. The air in Pinggan felt so fresh, totally different from the busy, hot city atmosphere we’re used to. The place made me feel more relaxed and gave me a welcome break from the everyday rush.

After pitching the tent and sorting out our gear, we started to enjoy our time together. We sat around, sipping coffee and snacking on treats we’d brought from home. Even though the activities were simple, the vibe was great because we had so much to talk about. We shared stories about what we’d been up to, especially our friend who’s studying in Bandung. It really felt like being back in high school again.

When night came, Pinggan got even more beautiful. Distant house lights dotted the landscape, making the night view magical. We lit a campfire and gathered around it. While enjoying the warmth, we chatted, joked, and soaked in the peaceful night.

Because we wanted a little early New Year feeling, we also set off a few fireworks. Even though it was only December 22, 2025, the moment felt special since we were celebrating together. The fireworks lighting up the night sky made everything more exciting, and that’s one of the memories that stuck with me the most from the trip.

But the weather didn’t fully cooperate. Not long after we finished with the fireworks, it began to rain. At first it was just a light drizzle, but it soon turned into a heavier downpour. We all went into the tent and decided to wait until the rain eased.

Inside the tent the scene was kind of funny. After a full day of activities and the long trip, my friends started falling asleep one by one. I wasn’t sleepy yet, so I sat there listening to the rain outside. Soon one of my friends began snoring pretty loudly from exhaustion. I thought it was hilarious and even recorded a bit to tease him later. After a while, I fell asleep too.

The next morning I woke up around five. The first thing I did was step out of the tent to catch the famous Pinggan sunrise. Unfortunately, because of the rain the night before, the sunrise wasn’t as clear as I’d imagined. The sky was still covered with clouds and a light mist lingered. Even so, the view was still lovely. The calm morning and the cool Kintamani air made the experience worthwhile.

Not long after, my friends started waking up. We sat together again, enjoying a hot cup of coffee. That simple moment ended up being my favorite part of the camping trip. Just sitting, breathing the morning air, and talking with old friends felt much more meaningful than anything fancy.

For me, the short trip to Pinggan wasn’t just about enjoying nature; it was about spending time with friends I hadn’t seen in a long time. Even though we got rained on and the sunrise didn’t show up perfectly, the trip still became a memory I’ll always treasure.

Because in the end, what makes a trip unforgettable isn’t only the place it’s the people you share it with.
