My kind grandmother
My grandmother turned one hundred.
I thought to myself: if she keeps going like this for another twenty years, she might break the Guinness record. She’d already broken the city record. No pills, no special diet, no strict routine.
I joked with the doctor: “Can you prescribe a vitamin to keep her going?”
The doctor smiled: “She’s perfectly fine. Just old age. She’s relaxed and easygoing.”
As I thought back over the years, I remembered who she really was. Calm, kind, full of spirit. At sixty, she started learning to read and write. At that age, she still had hope and a hunger for learning. Later, I would buy her books of ancient tales. She would read them and tell me the stories.
She was also a wonderful host. Her villa with its peaceful garden was always open to guests.
I was lost in these thoughts when my grandmother, who was resting on the sofa, woke up.
I put my hand on hers. “How are you feeling, Grandma?”
“Fine, dear. Your aunt made a great stew. I just sleep a lot.”
“That’s good,” I said. “Eat well and rest.”
Five years later, she was gone.
Her genes were good. No pills, no serious illness, no regular exercise — she lived to a hundred. She never made it to Guinness. But she held the record for kindness. And that one doesn’t expire.
