Giraffe Print, Agave, and the Best Caviar You’ll Have All Week
Obvio, the sultry new supper club from Juan Santa Cruz and John Fraser, is making NoMad feel like the most interesting neighborhood in New York again.

Someone takes your coat at the door. It’s a small ceremony, a signal that you’ve crossed into somewhere that takes the evening seriously. Obvio opened in NoMad in spring 2025 and has been doing this quietly elegant thing ever since, making guests feel like the night has somewhere specific to go.
The room was designed by Juan Santa Cruz, the Chile-born restaurateur who also gave New York Casa Cruz, and the influence is unmistakable. Giraffe-print silk brocade lines the padded walls, shifting between champagne and gold depending on the light, which is yellow and low and flattering in the way that suggests someone thought hard about it. The floor is chevron carpet. There’s a curved bar. The whole place reads like a film set that happens to have very good cocktails.

The beverage program is Amy Racine’s domain, and she’s a genuine reason to come. Racine, a James Beard Foundation Award semifinalist and Beverage Director of JF Restaurants, has built the menu around agave spirits: tequila, mezcal, things that taste alive without being loud. The Obvio Martini is the obvious order, smoky and clean, served in glassware worth pausing over. The Firing Squad arrives with a precision that makes you think she probably argued about the ratio. She probably did.
The caviar service is, perhaps surprisingly, the table’s best moment. It comes with pineapple and cilantro, which sounds like a provocation but lands beautifully, salty and bright and a little tropical. Order it early, share it with whoever you brought, and then argue about whether to order another. (Order another.) The shrimp-shiso petals, Maine shrimp piped into shiso leaves and flash-fried in tempura, are delicate enough to feel slightly miraculous. The burger, made with Piedmontese beef on rosemary-buttered brioche with bourbon-infused peppercorns, is exactly what you want at 11 pm when the DJ has been playing for an hour.

Chef John Fraser’s menu skews shareable, which is the right call for a room like this. Individual plates feel antisocial here. The fluke ceviche has mandarin and ginger and fresno chili; the Ibérico ham comes with picos and a piquillo gilda. Everything is calibrated to keep you at the table rather than hurrying you toward a finish line. Some bars build menus that way by accident. Obvio seems to have done it on purpose.
The space earned Best Standalone Bar in the Americas at the 2025 Restaurant and Bar Design Awards, which is fair. But the design isn’t the point, or not the only point. Santa Cruz has described wanting the music to envelop you without being remembered, just the sensation. Which, honestly, describes the whole room. You’ll remember feeling a certain way there before you remember what the walls looked like.

It’s worth noting: the staff wears pit-crew coveralls, which is either a strange choice or a very Santa Cruz choice, and at this point, those are the same thing. It works. Gratuity is automatically added to the tab; there’s no flash photography inside; and from Thursday through Saturday, the energy shifts noticeably around 11, tipping from supper club into something closer to actual nightlife. If that’s what you’re after, go late. If it isn’t, Tuesday is yours.
For a first date, this is close to ideal, assuming your date is the kind of person who enjoys being slightly out of their element in a good way. For a group dinner, it works just as well, maybe better, since the menu is built for passing plates and the noise level rises gracefully. Obvio doesn’t do anything quietly, but it’s not loud in the way that makes conversation impossible. It’s loud in the way that makes the evening feel like it’s happening.
