I. Midnight, Six Years Old, and a Man Who Doesn’t Stare

It was past midnight. I had slipped out of bed in soft pajamas, half-asleep, heading for a glass of water. But a cold, greenish light leaked from underneath the living room door and stopped me in the hallway. My father was still awake. That alone was strange — the man goes to bed like clockwork. I pushed the door open with one finger.

He was sitting in that worn armchair, eyes locked to the screen. He wasn’t watching. He was receiving. The Matrix was on. And my father — a man who falls asleep during action sequences and calls most movies “noise” — was leaning forward, utterly still, like someone trying to read a text in a language they’ve almost forgotten.

I sat down beside him, saying nothing. I was six years old. I watched for a while: green digits cascading, a man in a long coat, some kind of corridor. I understood nothing. But I understood the feeling. Whatever was happening on that screen, it mattered. Then I fell asleep against his arm.

Twenty years later, I watched The Matrix again. This time as a director. As a writer. As someone building their own world — a film called The Crack — whose conceptual DNA had been fermenting in the cellars of simulation theory, sociology, and quantum physics for the better part of a year. And this time, I didn’t fall asleep. I didn’t blink.

II. The Aesthetic Architecture: Color, Lens, Rhythm, Sound

Let’s start where a director always starts: before the story, before the philosophy — the visual intelligence.

The Matrix (1999), directed by the Wachowskis, photographed by Bill Pope (ASC), is one of the most precisely engineered visual environments in modern cinema. Every frame is a deliberate argument about perception. Nothing is accidental.

Color Grading — The Syntax of Deception

The first thing you notice — or rather, the first thing your nervous system notices before your brain catches up — is the color. The simulated world, the Matrix, is drenched in a sickly, desaturated cyan-green palette. Not the green of nature or growth, but the green of phosphor screens, of old CRT monitors, of something artificial pretending to be alive. It is beautiful, and it is deeply wrong. The production designers and colorists made this choice with surgical intent: this is the color of a world that has been rendered, not grown.

When the characters cross into the real world — the Nebuchadnezzar, the underground city of Zion — the green evaporates. Everything turns cold blue, amber, rusted iron. The real is uncomfortable. The real has no color-correction.

This binary (cyan-green simulation / cold-real world) is a grammar lesson disguised as cinematography. You are always being told, at the level of your eyes, which world is which. Whether you consciously register it or not, your brain is being trained to feel the difference between the rendered and the actual.

Lenses and Depth — Bill Pope’s Optics

Bill Pope used a combination of Panavision anamorphic lenses and unconventional focal lengths to create images that feel simultaneously hyper-real and slightly off. Wide angles that distort space. Extreme close-ups that make skin look like terrain. The “bullet-time” sequences — that landmark technical breakthrough achieved by rigging 122 still cameras in a precise arc around the subject and firing them in rapid sequence — collapsed time and space into a single, suspended instant. The viewer doesn’t just watch the bullet slow down. They enter the moment. The camera is no longer observing physics; it is questioning it.

Sound Design and Score — The Machine’s Heartbeat

Don Davis’s orchestral score is not background music; it is atmospheric architecture. Polyphythmic brass sections. Atonal string clusters. The music never resolves into comfort. It sustains a state of cognitive unease — the sound of a system that is running, that is always running, beneath every surface.

Alongside Davis, the soundtrack layers Rob Dougan’s “Clubbed to Death” — a piece that sounds like grief being processed by machinery — and tracks from Rage Against the Machine, Prodigy, Massive Attack: the sound of institutional rage compressed into a pulse. It is not coincidental that all these artists, in their different ways, were producing work about systems, power, and the refusal of compliance. The music IS the thesis.

III. The Story — What Actually Happens, and Why It Breaks You

People remember The Matrix as an action film. They’re wrong. It’s a film about waking up. About what it costs to see clearly. And the cost is not intellectual — it’s visceral.

Thomas Anderson / Neo

Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) is a software developer at a faceless corporation by day, a hacker called Neo by night. He is a man who has felt, his entire life, that something is wrong. Not wrong in any articulable way. Just… a splinter behind the eye. A sense that the geometry of his reality is slightly off, that he is living inside a room that has no windows.

When Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) contacts him and offers him the red pill — the choice to see — the viewer expects illumination. What follows is something far more brutal: Neo waking up inside a pod, a naked, hairless body suspended in amniotic fluid, tubes inserted into every organ, a socket in the back of his skull. The camera does not look away. He vomits. He can’t stand. His muscles have never supported his weight before. This is not a heroic awakening. This is the experience of being unplugged from a machine that has been running your nervous system as a power source.

The real world is monstrous. It is dark, cold, loud, and smells of machine oil and human sweat. Waking up is the worst thing that has ever happened to him.

This is the scene the film’s philosophy is built on. The truth is not comfortable. Baudrillard was right: the real is a desert.

Agent Smith’s Confession

Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith is, technically, a program. A system process. An antivirus. But in the interrogation scene with Morpheus, the Wachowskis do something extraordinary: they give the machine an existential crisis.

Smith asks his colleagues to leave the room. He removes his earpiece. He sits down and begins to speak — not as a program executing, but as something that has been living inside this for too long and is quietly losing its mind. He describes the smell of human beings. The way flesh and organic matter revolts him. He talks about wanting out — not to destroy the Matrix, but to escape his own function within it. The code that was supposed to make him invincible has made him a prisoner.

“I hate this place,” he says. “This zoo. This prison. This reality — whatever you want to call it. I can’t stand it any longer.”

This is not a villain monologue. This is a confession from someone who has served a system faithfully, without question, for so long that the system has become indistinguishable from a cage.

We all know someone like this.

The Spoon

“Do not try and bend the spoon. That’s impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth. There is no spoon. Then you’ll see that it is not the spoon that bends — it is only yourself.”

A child in an Oracle’s waiting room, holding a spoon. A throwaway scene. Except it is the entire film compressed into thirty seconds.

The spoon doesn’t bend because the spoon is not real. The spoon is a rendered object in a simulation. The only thing that can be modified is the observer’s relationship to the code. Neo cannot alter the rules of physics inside the Matrix because he is still treating them as physics. When he understands they are merely assumptions — parameters written by a programmer — the rules bend.

This is not mysticism. This is, as we will discuss, a reasonably accurate description of quantum mechanics.

The Corridor — Seeing the Code

The final confrontation. Neo steps into the hallway, and Agent Smith empties a pistol into his chest. Neo falls. Then he rises.

But not because he has become invulnerable. He rises because he has stopped seeing the world as a world. He sees it as structure. Everything around him — the hallway, the agents, the bullets hanging in mid-air — resolves into streams of cascading green code. He is not inside a building. He is inside a data structure. And data structures can be read. Can be navigated. Can be walked through.

The camera pulls back as the bullets curve around him like confused birds. He reaches out one hand. “No.”

The system cannot stop a mind that has stopped believing in the system’s rules.

IV. Baudrillard and the Desert We Already Live In

Jean Baudrillard’s Simulacra and Simulation appears physically in the film — Neo hides his illegal software inside a hollowed-out copy. This is not a prop choice. It is a dedication.

Baudrillard argued, in brief, that modern consumer society has undergone a catastrophic substitution: we no longer live in reality, we live in representations of reality — and those representations have become more real to us than the reality they once mapped. The map has eaten the territory.

In 1999, this sounded like academic provocation. In 2025, it sounds like a weather report.

Think about it: when was the last time you experienced joy and your first instinct was not to record the experience for external consumption? When was the last time you ate a meal without photographing it, or visited a place without checking what it means to have visited it? We do not live in experiences. We live in the documentation of experiences. We are generating content from our own lives, in real time, for audiences we have never met, using our attention as currency to buy the attention of strangers.

The Matrix, in sociological terms, is not science fiction. It is metaphor rendered visible. The pods where humans float, pumped full of synthetic experience, are your phone. The agents who maintain the system’s stability are not men in black suits — they are algorithms that decide what you see, what you don’t see, what you want, what you fear.

Baudrillard called this the age of the hyperreal: a simulation so complete it has no reference to any original. The Matrix shows you this as a green-lit dystopia. Our version has better branding.

V. The Quantum Architecture of the Simulation

Here is where we move from philosophy to physics. And here is where I will say something that may disturb you: the scientific literature does not disprove simulation theory. In several notable instances, it actively supports it.

The Double-Slit Experiment and Observer-Dependent Reality

This is perhaps the most destabilizing result in the history of science. When physicists fire photons or electrons at a barrier with two slits, the particles behave like waves — they pass through both slits simultaneously and create an interference pattern on the back wall, which is what waves do, not particles.

But when physicists set up a detector to observe which slit the particle passes through, something impossible happens: the particle stops behaving like a wave. It chooses one slit. It behaves like a thing, not a wave. The interference pattern disappears.

The particle knows it is being observed. And it changes its behavior accordingly.

This is not a fringe result or a contested finding. It is one of the most replicated experiments in all of science. Quantum mechanics — the most precisely verified theory in the history of physics — tells us that physical reality, at the subatomic level, is observer-dependent. Things are not determinate until they are measured.

The simulation theory interpretation: the universe renders itself only when observed, like a video game that loads assets only for the part of the map the player is currently in. The rest exists as probability — as code, not matter — until consciousness engages with it.

The Planck Length — The Universe’s Pixel Size

In physics, there is a minimum meaningful length: the Planck length (approximately 1.6 × 10⁻³⁵ meters). Below this scale, the concept of “distance” breaks down entirely. You cannot subdivide space below this threshold. Space is, at its most fundamental level, granular.

Any designer, animator, or filmmaker understands intuitively what this means: the universe has a resolution. It has pixels. You can zoom in until you hit the minimum unit of information, and then there is nothing smaller to find — because the rendering engine does not compute below that scale.

The Speed of Light — Hardware Limitation

Nothing in the universe travels faster than light (approximately 299,792,458 meters per second in a vacuum). This is not a coincidence. This is not a quirk of matter. This is a universal constant that appears in every equation that describes physical reality.

Why would reality have a speed limit? Why not infinite velocity?

The simulation interpretation: the speed of light is the clock speed of the processor running the universe. Information cannot propagate faster than the system can compute it. This is why Einstein’s spacetime is not just a philosophical construct — it is a computational architecture. The faster you move, the more processing power is required to update your local reality relative to the universal frame. Time dilates. The system compensates.

Quantum Entanglement — Database Adjacency

When two particles are entangled, changing the state of one instantly affects the state of the other — regardless of the distance between them. We have observed this across kilometers. Einstein called it “spooky action at a distance” and refused to accept it until the end of his life. Every test since has confirmed it.

In physical space, this is impossible. Information cannot travel faster than light. And yet it happens.

The simulation interpretation: the two particles are not separated by physical distance. They are adjacent entries in the same database. Changing one variable in a data structure instantly updates its linked variable, regardless of where those variables might appear in the rendered environment. They are close in code even if far in space.

James Gates and the Error-Correcting Codes

Sylvester James Gates Jr., a theoretical physicist at MIT, was working on the mathematical foundations of supersymmetry when he found something that stopped him cold. Embedded within the equations — not added, not assumed, but intrinsic to the mathematics — were structures identical to the error-correcting codes used in computer browsers to check and repair data transmission errors.

The same algorithms that your browser uses to make sure data packets arrive intact are written into the mathematical fabric of the universe. Not as an analogy. As an exact structural match.

Gates himself said: if this is real, it means someone or something has embedded a self-correcting code into the fundamental structure of reality. The universe, apparently, has a backup system.

VI. The System’s Glitches — Evidence We Walk Past Every Day

Simulation theory does not require you to be a physicist to find the cracks. The psychological and sociological evidence has been accumulating for decades, dismissed as paranormal curiosity, waiting for a framework serious enough to hold it.

The Mandela Effect — Database Merge Errors

The Mandela Effect describes a documented phenomenon: large groups of people independently sharing the same detailed false memory. Not vague errors, but specific, vivid, consistent ones. Thousands of people remember Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s. Thousands remember the Monopoly man wearing a monocle. Thousands remember a specific logo with a detail that never existed in recorded history.

From a neuroscience perspective, these are just collective confabulations. From a simulation perspective, they are patch notes applied incorrectly. The Architect updated a variable in the database, but the previous version remained cached in a subset of users’ local memory. The patch wasn’t fully applied. The old version and the new version coexist in the same population, creating a schism in consensus reality.

Deja vu: a lag spike. The system briefly loads the current scene from a cached version before the live render catches up. For one fraction of a second, you experience two simultaneous frames — past and present — overlapping. The brain interprets this as memory.

The Double-Slit, Revisited — Philip K. Dick’s Warning

Philip K. Dick — whose novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? became Blade Runner — gave a lecture in Metz, France in 1977 that has become one of the most cited texts in simulation philosophy. He said, from personal experience and without irony, that he believed reality was a programmed environment, and that the only evidence available to us was found in the inconsistencies: moments when the program updated, when variables shifted, when the expected output of the world failed to match the observed output.

He called these moments of dissonance the “glitch” — twenty years before that word entered the cultural vocabulary.

Dick believed that what we call history, what we call linear time, what we call consistent physical law — these are the cosmetic surface of something far stranger. And if you look at the margins, at the corners where the render hasn’t quite completed, you can sometimes see the code beneath.

This is not science. This is one man’s perception. But then, perception is all any of us have.

VII. The Consumption Society and the Voluntary Pod

The 1999 Wachowski sisters were not predicting artificial intelligence or autonomous machines. They were describing 1999. The Matrix is a mirror held up to late-capitalist consumer society — not its future, its present, refracted through speculative fiction into something visible.

The pods in which humans float, kept alive and docile by simulated experience, are not a metaphor for some future technology. They are the television. The smartphone. The infinite scroll. The algorithm that knows what you want before you do, because it designed the want.

We did not resist the pods. We pre-ordered them.

Consider the difference between the forced servitude of The Matrix and the arrangement we have voluntarily constructed. Morpheus’s humans were imprisoned against their will. We carry our prisons in our pockets. We pay subscription fees for the privilege of more deeply inhabiting the simulation. We perform our own experiences back to ourselves through the interfaces — the story, the reel, the post — and mistake the documentation for the life.

Baudrillard’s insight, updated: we no longer have experiences and then represent them. We curate representations of experiences we arrange specifically to have something to represent. The territory has been consumed entirely. Only the map remains.

The Stanley thermos, the Aperol Spritz, the branded wellness retreat, the carefully composed flat-lay of a home office — these are not lifestyles. They are render outputs. They are the simulation’s consumer-grade proof of concept, endlessly duplicating across millions of screens, each instance identical in its insistence on individuality.

Agent Smith, in his interrogation room monologue, describes humans as a virus: “Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment. But you humans do not… You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed. And the only way you can survive is to spread to another area.”

This is not a cyberpunk critique. This is David Attenborough with a black suit and a bad attitude. It is also, more or less, the current trajectory of late-stage consumer capitalism, described with more precision than most economists manage.

VIII. The Crack — What Comes After the Door

The Matrix showed us the door. It took us to the threshold, gave us the red pill, and let us see the desert of the real.

But what happens after the door? What happens to the people the system didn’t bother to agent? The people it didn’t pursue — just expelled. Quietly. Through rejection letters, frozen bank accounts, cities that price you out, systems that simply don’t include you in their render cycle?

This is the territory of The Crack.

My upcoming film — as director and writer — is not science fiction. It does not trade in leather coats or wire-fu or cascading code. It trades in concrete. In grey skies. In the specific, suffocating weight of a modern city that has no space for you in its architecture.

Where The Matrix posits a simulation run by malevolent machines, The Crack asks: what if the simulation is run by nobody? What if the system isn’t malevolent — just indifferent? What if it doesn’t hunt you down; it simply fails to allocate resources to your existence?

The Matrix’s agents come after you because you matter to the system — you are a resource it needs to recover. In The Crack, the horror is that the system doesn’t come. There are no agents. There is no pursuit. The system just… moves on, renders the next frame, and you are not in it.

The sociological glitch is not the red pill. It is the moment you realize the pill was never offered to you in the first place.

And yet the crack appears. Not in the code — in the concrete. In the texture of the city, in the margins the system has not bothered to smooth over, in the corners where the render power hasn’t reached. Something bleeds through. Something that was here before the simulation was optimized. Something organic, persistent, and impossible to fully suppress.

The Crack lives in that margin. It is a film about what survives the system’s indifference. It is, among other things, a love letter to everyone the simulation forgot to process.

I won’t tell you what happens in the final frame. But I’ll tell you this: when the screen goes dark, the room you’re sitting in will feel slightly different. The walls will feel slightly thinner. And you may find yourself, for the first time in a long while, wondering what’s on the other side.

IX. The Red Porsche Theory — A Personal Coda

I want to end with something that will either confirm that I am a serious filmmaker with a rigorous theoretical framework, or confirm that I have been alone in Berlin for too long and the grey skies have done their work.

I call it the “Red Porsche Theory”

Quantum mechanics — specifically Feynman’s Sum Over Histories — tells us that particles do not travel from A to B in a single straight line. They travel all possible lines simultaneously. They take the rational route, the irrational route, the route through the sun, the route through the past, the route through the future. All of these paths exist, superimposed, until the system collapses the wave function and produces one observed outcome.

What collapses the wave function? The observer. The act of looking.

I believe — and I cannot prove this, and my inability to prove it does not mean it is false — that consciousness functions similarly at the macro scale. That what we attend to, what we genuinely and persistently observe, exerts a kind of pressure on the probability space around us. That the act of watching for something, truly watching, changes the odds of its appearance.

So: in Berlin, walking streets that have rejected me more times than I can count, I watch for a red Porsche. Not as a symbol of wealth I don’t have. Not as a wish. As a test. As a message. As a way of asking the Architect — whatever the Architect is — whether it’s listening.

The day a red Porsche appears at the exact right moment in the exact right way, I will know the system received the transmission. I will know the observation has collapsed the wave. I will know we are in communication.

You may think this is magical thinking dressed in physics clothes. You may be right.

But here is what I know for certain: the universe does not owe me a proof. My inability to prove the theory does not make it false. Every great shift in scientific understanding began as an intuition that the dominant framework could not accommodate. Quantum mechanics itself was dismissed as philosophy until it became the foundation of every semiconductor on Earth.

I am not a physicist. I am a director. My instruments are not particle accelerators — they are cameras, light, time, and the persistent, ungovernable human instinct that something is behind the curtain.

The Crack is my attempt to film that curtain.
