The newscaster’s cliched cadence polluted the living room, rendering the air cheap and stale. Another bear attack. Another unidentified body found in the mountain forests. The public trembles in fear, eagerly consuming the tragedy.
I switched off the TV. A cold chill, disguised as silence, expanded into every corner of the room.
How profoundly rational. Humans are forever searching for places to conceal death. And the mountain forest is nature’s ultimate concealment device — where a starved bear waits as the perfect accomplice.
My steps toward the parking lot are as light as a feather. In the trunk, my husband sleeps in absolute silence.
“Well then.”
I grip the keys tight. Praying that the bears are hungry again tonight, I press down on the accelerator.

Author’s Note: Every day, the news in Japan is full of stories about bears. Looking at the reports of bodies found in the mountains, I began to wonder if every single one of them was really caused by a bear. This piece was born from a desire to channel that thought into fiction.
