How can I slow down time in the mind?

There are a few ways to explain this.

When you are busy in mind the day passes quickly so it seems time speeds up when there is constant action in mind. When you are not busy and present in the moment in mind time can feel like it is slowed down — you can get bored with nothing to occupy the mind.

The above seems to suggest to me that time is dependent on how preoccupied your mind is or the extent to which it is preoccupied.

So if time is linked to the speed of the flow of thought in the mind, then slowing thought down will give the impression that time is passing slowly in the mind.

So the impression of time in the mind is related to action in the mind.

So you can slow down that sense of time in the mind if you can get to that point in the mind, where all thinking in the mind has stopped.

Road map of the thinking mind:

So if you get out of the verbal thinking mind and in the silent mind and have control over your pictorial thinking mind then time would have already slowed up some. But now if you stop all pictorial thinking and image-making in the mind and live with just “choiceless observation” of your surroundings, then with no action in mind and no thinking then time would have also slowed down considerably.

You can take still take the mind further to the point of what the Buddhist call “Sunyata” in the mind where all action in the mind has stopped, including thinking and here time would have come to almost at a standstill, with just observation in mind, or in meditation with eyes closed — the clock in the mind has stopped.

You take this state of the mind a step further, and the mind disappears and returns with no memory of where it has been. Here the clock in the mind has disappeared and returned when the mind returned and this in a sense can slow down time even further as the mind has lost time and come back to the same point it left an hour ago.

Hence kicking verbal thinking into the periphery of the mind, and entering the silent mind and stopping all thinking in the mind is the slowing of time in the mind.

I remember an image I had in my mind of reading of the buddha staring into the night sky from his hut after enlightenment with nothing in his mind, where time for him has almost stopped with no action in mind but just observation.

You can see why enlightenment has an impact on the mind because time has slowed down and brought to a standstill when all activities in the mind have stopped.

Time in mind is action in mind. Time is movement in mind. Time in the mind is the movement of thinking in the mind from 1 thought to another. Time in mind is the distance travelled in mind during the thinking process. Time is distance or movement of thought. Memory is time: past present and future.

Enlightenment is time in the mind that has slowed down and stopped.

The ending of suffering in mind.
