Spilled Milk

Veteran June Hamilton was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) when she was only 24, just after leaving the military. Doctors told her that her career and independence were over. However, she chose a different route than what the doctors were saying. This route was made possible with the support from her family, friends, and the VA health care system. She pursued a degree in computer science; which led to a successful 30 year career. She truly created a life on her own terms, despite the doubts about her independence from the doctors.

Her journey proves how resilience can make such an impact in your life.

MS causes fatigue, pain, mobility limitations and emotional challenges, and for veterans, it brings a lot of uncertainty about the future. Hamilton emphasis that she could not have done this life without the VA and being open to their care and all they have to offer.

Hamilton says,

“I’ve learned it’s okay to use the tools available — whether it’s a cane, an electric chair, or VA programs that make life more manageable. Never give up. Keep trying to go one more step, but also give yourself rest. And when you need to, it’s okay to cry over spilled milk.”
