How culture shapes color names

If I show you three paint chips and ask for their colors, you might say: blue, purple, brown.

If your first language is different from mine, you might use fewer words. Maybe two. Maybe one. To describe them all.

That is the odd thing about color. Human eyes are picking up the same physical spectrum, but languages cut that spectrum in different places. The world gives us a gradient. Language gives us categories.

That is the idea behind Vox’s very interesting video on color names. And once you see it, you cannot really unsee it. Color words stop being simple labels and start looking like tiny pieces of cultural design and history baked into language.

Color vs. language

Color in the real world is continuous. One wavelength slides into the next.

Language wants categories. It wants boxes. It wants “this is green” and “this is blue,” even if the border is fuzzy.

That means every language has to solve the same problem: where do you draw the lines on the rainbow, and which lines deserve names?

For a long time, the assumption was that cultures made those cuts in their own separate ways. One language might have a basic word for orange. Another might treat it as a kind of red. That view was challenged in the late 1960s, when Brent Berlin and Paul Kay asked speakers of different languages to name standardized color chips using ordinary everyday terms. They began to see a pattern.

Languages did not seem to pick random slices of the spectrum. Instead, they often added basic color words in a similar order. First something like black and white. Then red. Then green and yellow. Then blue. Later came things like brown, orange, pink, purple, and gray.

So the differences between languages were not pure chaos. They looked more like different points along a shared tendency.

Even if you do not care about the exact hierarchy, this matters for one reason: it suggests that not every color distinction is equally likely to become a basic word. Some cuts are close to universal. Others are optional. And that is where culture enters the picture.

Less color, more meaning

The Vox video uses a one simple example.

Show three paint chips to an English speaker and you will probably hear blue, purple, and brown.

Ask a speaker of Wobé, a language spoken in and around Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia, and you may get a much broader term covering all three. That is not because Wobé speakers cannot see the differences. It is because the language organizes basic color vocabulary very differently, with a much smaller core set.

This is where culture starts to leak in.

Some languages, such as Yele, or more precisely Yélî Dnye, from Papua New Guinea, are often discussed because their basic color vocabulary does not map neatly onto the kind of separate hue categories English speakers expect. Yet speakers still describe colors through reference to things in the world, including objects and materials around them. So even where the “basic” set is small, the practical vocabulary of color can still be rich.

Other languages, like Hanunóo in the Philippines, pack more into each color term. Their core categories are not just about hue. They also track qualities like lightness and darkness, freshness and dryness. Color is not treated as a separate slider. It is part of the condition of the thing being described.

Already you can see three different design decisions:

  • A language that keeps color words strict and minimal.
  • A language that happily leans on object comparisons.
  • A language that folds color into texture and freshness.

Same visual input. Different ways of mapping it into words. Those mapping choices come from culture, environment, and what people actually need to talk about.

Universal patterns

When Berlin and Kay first shared their hierarchy, they got a lot of criticism. Their sample was small. Many participants were bilingual. The languages leaned heavily toward industrialized societies.

So in the late 1970s, a much larger follow-up project was launched: the World Color Survey. Researchers tested more than a hundred mostly unwritten languages, often spoken in smaller non-industrial communities. The chips were the same. The question was the same. But the dataset was far bigger.

The broad pattern survived. Many languages still seemed to add basic color words in a similar rough order. But the newer work also made the picture more nuanced. The strongest similarities were often found in focal points, the best examples of a color, while boundaries remained more variable. And later critiques, including work on Yélî Dnye, argued that not every language treats color as one neat, fully named domain in the first place.

That gives us a useful way to think about the differences.

There seems to be a kind of universal skeleton. Many languages converge on good examples of red, green, yellow, and blue.

On top of that skeleton, each culture chooses how many of those cuts to care about, where exactly to draw the border between neighbors, and how to talk about the spaces in between.

That is how you get languages with no separate everyday word for blue, only a broader zone that covers both blue and green. Or languages that split blue into two basic terms and treat those shades as meaningfully separate. The physics of light does not change. The cones in our eyes do not change. The grid we lay on top does.

Why some colors come first

So why do languages keep landing on similar sequences?

One answer is about usefulness.

Warm colors often belong to the kinds of things humans talk about a lot: blood, skin, clay, fruit, flowers, fire, warning signals, ripe food. Gibson and colleagues argued that color naming across languages reflects communicative need. In simple terms, objects we care about are often warm-colored, while many backgrounds are cooler. That may help explain why warm colors are often easier to communicate precisely.

Another answer comes from computational and evolutionary models. Simulations of color naming do not produce arbitrary systems either. They tend to recover structured hierarchies rather than random labels, which suggests that shared pressures, perceptual and communicative, keep pushing languages toward similar solutions.

So the story is probably not “biology alone” or “culture alone.” It is that human perception gives us a set of constraints, and culture builds a naming system on top of them based on what is useful, noticeable, and worth talking about.

Do words shape color?

There is a bigger question hiding behind all this: if your language draws the lines differently, does your perception change too?

That is not easy to test, but there are some interesting hints.

Russian has two common everyday terms where English mostly has one: one for lighter blue and one for darker blue. Greek also distinguishes that part of the spectrum more strongly than English does.

Experiments have asked Russian speakers and English speakers to do fast color discrimination tasks. They see three blue squares and have to identify the odd one out. When the odd one crosses the Russian light-blue/dark-blue boundary, Russian speakers tend to respond faster. English speakers do not show the same jump in the same way. Similar effects have been reported in Greek, including differences in early brain responses when a change crosses a linguistically meaningful boundary.

The differences are not huge. They do not mean Russian speakers see a magical extra color that English speakers cannot. But they do suggest that language can tune attention. If your culture gives you a sharp linguistic edge between two blues, your brain may lean on that edge in quick tasks. If it treats them as one broader bucket, you are more likely to process them as variations of the same thing.

Color words as cultural stories

Beyond the basic mechanics, color words are also carriers of culture.

Take red.

In many Western contexts, red is danger, warning, stop, debt, love, passion, sometimes anger. It is used for error states, stop signs, sale tags.

In much of East Asia, red is luck, celebration, prosperity. Wedding dresses are red. New Year envelopes are red. A red interface element may feel festive rather than alarming.

In parts of Africa, red can be tied to blood, sacrifice, or political history. In parts of Eastern Europe, red can still echo communism.

Same wavelength. Very different stories.

White is another strong example.

In many Western settings, white is purity, weddings, cleanliness, new starts. Hospital walls, bridal gowns, fresh snow.

In several East and South Asian cultures, white is tied to death and mourning. Funeral clothing is white. White can signal loss rather than celebration.

Green can be nature, youth, and eco branding. It can also be the sacred color of Islam. In some places, a green hat on a man is a quiet sign his partner is unfaithful. In others, green is military, or “go”, or money.

These meanings are not random. They grow out of religion, climate, politics, local materials, and history. Once they settle, they shape how new things get named and designed.

A lipstick shade called “nude” in one market might be a specific beige. In another, that same word does not match the local idea of skin tone at all. A “royal purple” campaign color might read as mourning in a different country. A black interface might feel elegant somewhere and funereal elsewhere.

Color names are the way these stories enter daily speech. They are how culture gets attached to a particular patch of the spectrum.

Naming color with objects

We often assume every language has a clean list of free-standing color words. It does not have to work like that.

Some languages lean heavily on object names to talk about color. Sky-like. Banana-like. Blood-like. Leaf-like. Milk-like.

Yélî Dnye is one of the clearest reminders that this matters. If you only count a narrow set of “basic” words, the language can look sparse. But if you look at how speakers actually talk, object-based references do a lot of the real work.

This approach says something about what a culture finds salient.

If you live in a place where snow is a constant presence, you may end up making finer distinctions there. If you live in a desert, different shades of sand, heat, or dusk may matter more. If your community depends on the sea, blue-gray variation may carry more weight than it does inland.

Color terms built on objects often point straight at those priorities. They show which materials, foods, plants, and landscapes matter enough to become reference points.

You can see a softer version of the same thing in English. “Olive,” “salmon,” “chocolate,” and “champagne” are not just colors. They are also clues to what the culture notices, consumes, and sells.

Why it matters for design

If you work in design, UX, or branding, none of this is just theory. Color names are part of the interface.

You name what you care about. A design system that only has “blue-500” and “blue-700” as tokens is saying something. It is saying, for this product, these are the only two levels of blue that matter enough to name.

A system that separates “link,” “link-hover,” “link-pressed,” “accent,” “brand,” and “info” is doing the opposite. It is exposing function in the vocabulary. In a way, that is closer to how everyday language works too. Small categories, but high-value ones. The names stick because they keep returning in useful situations.

You also inherit cultural stories whether you like it or not. If you ship a checkout flow with a red primary button into a context where red strongly signals stop, error, or risk, you may be working against your users’ instincts. If you use a lot of white in a context where white is closely tied to mourning, the interface may land colder than you intended.

Even the names you choose for themes can clash. Calling a palette “Corona-blue” might have sounded neutral years ago. It does not sound neutral now.

User research can be as simple as showing a few colored cards with names attached and asking, “What does this feel like to you?” The answers will not always match your original mood board.

When you label a destructive action “danger” and make it red, you are not just picking a color. You are aligning with a very old and widely shared association. When you label a calming feature “forest” and tint it green, you are doing the same thing from the other direction.

Those decisions add up. Over time they reinforce certain stories about color: what looks trustworthy, what looks risky, what looks playful, what looks serious. And that is probably the part I find most interesting. We often talk about color as if it lives only in the eye. But the moment a shade gets a name, it enters culture. It becomes easier to remember, easier to compare, easier to sell, easier to fear, easier to celebrate.

The spectrum may be continuous. The names never are. They are chosen, inherited, and redesigned every time a culture decides which differences matter enough to say out loud.
