The rain struck the tall stained-glass windows of St. Jude’s rectory, but inside the reading room, six witnesses sat around the long mahogany table.

Detective Vance stood near the door, his notebook open. An hour ago, the archivist had been found dead upon his desk in the adjoining study, killed by a cardiac toxin in his tea. Beside the corpse lay a porcelain teacup, wiped entirely clean.

Six writers remained in the reading room. Vance reviewed their six witness statements aloud: “Mary Acton sat nearest the hearth. Sunita Chakraborty sat facing the courtyard window. Majibai (माजिभै) sat beside the wall of bookcases. Golam Mohiuddin sat facing the oak door. Maria Rattray sat at the head of the table, and Poet In The Arctic occupied the alcove end. Each of you swears you remained in your seat all evening and never entered the study.

All six nodded in silent unison.

The silence lingered. Rain tapped steadily against the coloured glass, washing fractured reds and blues across the polished tabletop. Vance studied each face in turn. No trembling hands. No hurried breathing. No lingering glance toward the adjoining study. They looked less like strangers gathered by misfortune than members of a choir who had rehearsed the same hymn until every note rang perfectly true.

He turned another page in his notebook.

Six people,” he murmured. “Six accounts. Different words, identical structure.

Mary Acton folded her hands. “We have told you everything, Detective.

I believe you have,” Vance replied. “Now tell it differently.

A faint crease crossed Sunita Chakraborty’s brow. “Differently?

The truth survives rearrangement.

Majibai (माजिभै) shifted in her chair. “Nothing changes.

That’s precisely what interests me.

Golam Mohiuddin spoke for the first time. “We all lived the same evening.

So you should remember it differently,” Vance said.

Maria Rattray leaned forward. “You’re asking us to contradict ourselves.

I’m asking you to remember.

Only Poet In The Arctic remained silent, his gaze fixed on the rain threading down the stained glass.

Vance closed his notebook.

Curious,” he murmured. “Six memories. One voice.

No one answered.

The room had reached that peculiar stillness Vance distrusted most — the kind born not of innocence, but of complete agreement.

Majibai (माजिभै) glanced toward the corner of the room and frowned. “Forgive me, Detective… but does your friend always materialise out of shadows like a vampire?

Vance didn’t look up. “Only on weekdays.

Mary Acton allowed herself a faint smile. “Does he prefer his Bloody Marys after sunset?

We’ve never been brave enough to ask,” Vance replied.

From the shadows near the clock, Julian Cross stepped forward. He ignored the suspects, walking past the table to the silver service tray on the sideboard. He stopped and looked at the tray.

Five,” Cross said.

Vance stepped to the sideboard. Five cups rested on the tray.

The elderly housekeeper spoke up from the doorway. “I served six cups myself, Detective. Ms. Poet In The Arctic always insists on the blue-rimmed one — she refuses to drink from any other.

Vance looked toward the adjoining study.

The housekeeper looked at the tray’s empty spot and added softly, “…and that’s the one beside the archivist.

Poet In The Arctic looked away from the rain. “Someone could have carried my cup into the study after I left it here.

Vance nodded once. “They could have.” He closed his notebook. “But they couldn’t have carried your alibi with it.

Silence settled over the room.

Vance met Poet’s eyes. “Five cups returned to this table,” he said. “The sixth reached the dead man.

He looked directly across at the alcove. “Your statement never left this room. Your cup did.
