Bisociative Thinking in Language Education — Seeking Input from Fellow Educators

I’ve been researching creative approaches to advanced language learning and wanted to share some findings while seeking your perspectives.

The Core Problem:

Most advanced ESL/EFL learners (B2-C1) hit a plateau where functional proficiency becomes “good enough.” They communicate effectively but their language remains static — same vocabulary, same structures, limited risk-taking.

Traditional solutions (more reading, more grammar study, more vocabulary lists) provide marginal gains because the issue isn’t knowledge exposure. It’s retrieval and recombination under cognitive pressure.

The Bisociative Approach:

Arthur Koestler’s concept of bisociation (from The Act of Creation, 1964) describes how creativity emerges when two unrelated conceptual frames intersect unexpectedly. Unlike association (linking related ideas), bisociation forces novel connections.

Applied to language learning, this means activities that:

  • Introduce incompatible elements (compare “jealousy” and “architecture”)
  • Demand causal reasoning with absurd premises (“Explain how one incident caused both acrophobia and agoraphobia”)
  • Require analogical thinking across domains (“Why does archaeologist experience qualify someone for pastry chef?”)

The cognitive dissonance blocks formulaic responses, forcing genuine improvisation and creative language use.

Questions for Discussion:

  1. Have you observed this plateau effect in your students? How have you traditionally addressed it?
  2. What’s your experience with randomized/unexpected prompts in classroom settings? Do students respond well or resist?
  3. For those teaching advanced learners: How do you balance correctness with creativity? Do you find traditional assessment (rubrics, error correction) conflicts with encouraging linguistic risk-taking?
  4. Any concerns about using absurdity/humor in formal educational contexts? Cultural considerations?
  5. Have you experimented with defamiliarization techniques (making familiar concepts strange to provoke fresh thinking)?

My Platform Context:

I’m developing activities based on these principles through Grandomastery (https://grandomastery.com) — currently 70+ activity types with randomized variables generating billions of unique combinations. All human-designed (no AI generation), focused on training the cognitive skills AI can’t replicate.

But I’m genuinely interested in hearing from educators working in different contexts: K-12, adult education, corporate training, test prep, etc.

Specific Scenarios I’m Curious About:

  • How would this approach work with exam-focused students (IELTS, TOEFL) who want measurable, predictable progress?
  • What about students from educational cultures emphasizing correctness over experimentation?
  • Integration with existing curricula vs. supplementary enrichment?

Would love to hear your experiences, critiques, or suggestions. This community has always provided thoughtful perspectives on educational innovation.

Thanks in advance for engaging with this!
