April 18: World Circus Day. How do you feel about circuses? Are they just good fun? Or cruel to the animals? (Sondra Singer - Still Vital)
As a kid, I used to love it when the circus came to town. There was Bullen’s , Ashton’s, Wirth’s and Sole Brothers Circuses. From memory, they all had animal acts. We used to go before the circus opened and walk around and see the animals in their cages on wheels. Lions, tigers, and monkeys. The elephants weren’t in cages but they were tethered on the grass.
The part of the circus I liked best was the flying trapeze artists. They were all so beautiful. I’d hold my breath until the tightrope walker made it to safety. There were no safety nets for them back then. Can you believe that?
The circus experience has changed since then. I’ve been to two Cirque du Soleil shows and they’ve been jaw-droppingly brilliant! How can humans do that??? There’s another one coming to Brisbane in August. Tickets aren’t cheap. It’s been more than 8 years since I last saw a Cirque du Soleil.
No animals. But humans showing us what they can do with training is mesmerising and entertaining. Let the animals roam free as they were born to do. Don’t put them in a circus or a zoo!
