This initial stage provides the vital organic material, known as biomass, that’s essential for ethanol production.
Next, these grown plants and trees are harvested.
The harvested biomass then undergoes a pre-processing stage to extract cellulose.
This cellulose is further processed, often using enzymes or chemicals, to break it down into simpler sugars.
After this, microorganisms are introduced to these sugars, triggering a process called fermentation, which yields both ethanol and carbon dioxide.
Finally, the produced ethanol is put to use as a biofuel in various vehicles, like cars, trucks, and airplanes, releasing carbon dioxide in the process.
It’s important to note that the carbon dioxide released when ethanol burns is the same carbon dioxide initially absorbed by the plants as they grew, suggesting a neat carbon cycle at play.
