Each year, households are selected for routine review.
The purpose of the audit is simple: to determine whether expectations have been adequately communicated, reasonably interpreted, and mutually understood.
The purpose is not to assign blame.
This objective has never been achieved.
Submission of Evidence

Both parties are invited to submit supporting documentation.
Examples may include
- statements believed to be obvious
- hints believed to be sufficient
- facial expressions believed to be self-explanatory
- conversations that allegedly occurred several years ago
Evidence is accepted in any format except certainty.
Examples submitted during this year’s review included
• Failure to identify the location of the Good Scissors
• Misinterpretation of the phrase “whenever you’re ready”
• Repeated inability to recognize a sigh as a complete communication event
Review of Historical Records

A committee examines archived materials.
Particular attention is given to the category known as I Thought You Knew.
Unfortunately, most records consist of assumptions, impressions, remembered tone, and events reconstructed from incomplete memory.
Several auditors requested reassignment.

After extensive review, the committee reached the following conclusions.
Both parties acted reasonably based upon entirely different understandings of the situation.
Neither party possessed the information they believed the other party possessed.
Several expectations were found to exist without ever having been spoken aloud.
These expectations remain active.
Final Determination
The audit remains officially unresolved.
A follow-up review has been scheduled for next year.
Neither Bert nor Lucy remembers requesting it.
