The Life of A Floater Friend
Always present, rarely chosen, but quietly holding everything together.

The Life of a Floater Friend
I’ve always been a friend who floats in the background. Not the first person you call when you’re happy, not the shoulder you run to when you’re crying. I’m the one who quietly shows up, the one who listens more than speaks, the one who fills in the empty spaces when no one else is around.
Sometimes, it hurts to know I’m never the “favourite.” I see the group photos where I’m just another face, the conversations where my voice fades unnoticed, the plans where I’m added last. It’s a quiet ache, the kind that doesn’t scream but lingers, reminding me that I’m always close but never close enough.
But being a floater friend doesn’t mean I don’t care deeply. In fact, it’s the opposite. I notice the little things others overlook—the tired look in your eyes, the way your laughter hides exhaustion, the moments you go silent because words are too heavy. I may not always be chosen first, but I choose to stay every time.
There are nights when I wonder if my presence even matters. If I stopped showing up, would anyone notice? Or would the world keep spinning without skipping a beat? These thoughts weigh on me, yet I keep holding on because being a floater doesn’t mean being worthless. It means I love in ways that are quiet but steady.
The truth is, not everyone can be the spotlight. Some of us are meant to be the steady glow in the background, keeping things from falling apart. I may not always be seen, but I am there—cheering silently, supporting quietly and loving without needing to be the centre .
While it sometimes breaks me to feel invisible, I remind myself that presence itself is a form of love. Even if no one says it, even if no one sees it, I know my role matters. Maybe not loudly, maybe not obviously, but in the moments, people feel less alone because I stayed—that is enough.
So yes, I am the floater friend. It’s not the favourite, not the closest, not the first choice. But I am here, always here, holding a place that may seem small to others, but is filled with all the love my heart can give.
