Is the phrase “Conviction over math” just an idiom ???

After I chose PCMB in Class 11, most of my immediate peers were excited to finally be free from the crowd of the “artists” and “intellectuals”, at least that’s how we would jokingly pull the leg of the other streams.

We, the “pure science” students, the self-proclaimed upper caste of academics, had a pet obsession: to be dead end logical in every aspect of life.

Study these many hours. Read only this content. Walk this many steps to burn 2,000 kcal. Drink exactly three litres of water. You know the rest of the drill.

It took me about five years to reshape my perspective and realize that life is far beyond the myth that it follows a predictable algorithm, or that every outcome can be logically engineered.

I believe there are two major archetypes of success.

The first are “The Statisticians.” Before starting anything, they do the obvious thing: they look up how many people before them succeeded. In most cases, that number is tiny , often a percentage point, sometimes a fraction of one. Any person with basic common sense would want to belong to this group. It’s a sensible approach.

Wish life was that simple!

Then there are “The Believers.” Mad Conviction-driven, opportunistic, adaptable, and relentlessly hopeful. These people never interpret low probability as a rejection of the plan itself. When one branch of their strategy crashes into a wall, they immediately begin searching for another route instead of mourning why the original plan failed.

Ironically, both groups are right.

The Believers are Step 1.

The Statisticians are Step 2.

In India, if you want to crack any competitive exam, the number of applicants is huge, in multiple lakhs. The probability of getting into one of the Tier 1 engineering or business schools, ranges from 0.5% to 1.5% to 2%. The numbers scream impossible, but also your neighbourhood dork, the clumsy kid who used to trip and fall after stepping on a stone, somehow cracked Upsc Cse with rank 607. What could be the magic possibly??

The magic is that , they put conviction >>> math, and this Sequence works in favour of most people. Probability describes the average outcome. It does not describe if you are meant to fail.

Why Self Conviction is “Step 1”???

Before looking at a single metric, establishing an unshakeable belief, unflinching faith that you are capable of scaling your value. You have to believe that your future self will be 1000x more capable than the version of you standing at the starting line today.

This isn’t empty self-help but it is a neurochemical necessity. When you possess deep self-conviction, your motivation shifts from voluntary strain to involuntary habit. You stop constantly forcing yourself to do the work because the work becomes a natural extension of your identity, and no more a flex.

Cant miss the Math either!

Once, and only once, the cold started the diesel engine, you bring in the data. Now, you use metrics, probability, and optimization to direct your energy efficiently. Follow the map foever until another mountain is encountered, that’s when you re-route. That’s how you ensure you atleast have a story if not the desired result.

When could you use Delusion to your favour???

We have all found ourselves facing a critical deadline or a massive exam with a radically insufficient amount of time left on the clock.

Calculator looks at the remaining hours, runs the numbers, determines it is mathematically impossible to cover the material, and paralyzes themselves with tension.

A Believer activates a form of tactical delusion.

By choosing an irrational level of optimism in the final moments, you instantly kill the friction of anxiety. Your mind stops wasting energy calculating the consequences of failure and channels 100% of its processing power into immediate, hyper-focused execution.

Will you get the absolute perfect result? Maybe not. But you will secure a massive net positive outcome compared to the absolute zero yielded by surrender.
