Let’s Talk about Gollum

The creepiest character I have seen in movies

I had not seen The Lord of the Rings movie until I came to the USA in 2011. My spouse showed me the movie at home. I don’t usually find fictional or horror movie characters fearsome, but this one genuinely scared me.

Gollum is a complex character from J.R.R. Tolkien’s book The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. You might have known him from the namesake movie series. If not, let me tell about this creepy character.

Gollum was a originally a hobbit named Sméagol who lived peacefully with his family. One day, Sméagol and his relative Déagol went fishing, and Déagol found a Ring. Sméagol immediately desired it and murdered Déagol to possess it.

The Ring’s power twisted his body and mind. He remained a dual-character in one body. Sméagol, the pitiable one while Gollum, the evil, manipulative one obsessed with the Ring.

Gollum calls the Ring “My precious.” “We wants it, we needs it. Must have the precious.”

Bilbo Baggins encounters him in a dark cavern. Gollum told the wizard Gandalf that he killed Déagol to possess the Ring. Gandalf understood the Ring’s corrupting influence. Later, Gollum guides Frodo and Sam toward Mordor.

Gollum’s story should be taken as a cautionary tale about how temptation and obsession can destroy a person and make them lose their original self.

It touched me deeply because I have seen real-life characters who became obsessed with petty things — a woman, a piece of land, a job, the desire to have a son — motivations so consuming that they ended up destroying themselves and hurting others.

Gollum’s split personality is not just a fictional, it’s something we often see in society. Some people are just like Gollum — greedy, obsessive, repulsive, and dangerous.

So, I say to keep body healthy, to let mind uncontaminated, and make retinal decisions.
