I Think I Might Be Missing My Te Function
Ever felt quietly undervalued, in ways you can’t quite explain? This may be a long read, but you might too find what you’re missing.
I Think I Might Be Missing My ‘Te’ Function
It started with an argument. Not a loud one. Not dramatic (a bit may be…) Just enough to leave a strange heaviness in my chest.
That familiar thought crept in, the one I know too well. Maybe I’m not valued enough.
And once that thought arrives, it doesn’t leave quietly.
I’m an INFP. Emotions aren’t visitors in my life; they’re permanent residents. My values, my feelings, my sense of right and wrong… they sit in the driver’s seat. I don’t just feel things; I live inside them!!
So when something hurts, it doesn’t stay small. It spreads. It spills into my concentration, my mood, my day. Sometimes even my future.
Today was supposed to be simple. I had an exam. But instead of revising frameworks, my mind was revisiting conversations. Replaying tones. Analyzing pauses. Searching for proof that I mattered.
At some point, I paused and asked myself something uncomfortable:
Is the other person really undervaluing me… or am I letting my feelings run unchecked?
That question jolted me out of my spiral. Because once I start overthinking, I don’t stop. And I knew, I need to sort this out now.
So I did what I always do when emotions overwhelm me. I searched (I love the internet 🙂↕️)
Videos. Articles. Personality theory. Forums. Cognitive functions. I went deep… almost obsessively… trying to understand what I was missing.
And somewhere between all that scrolling and thinking and self-questioning, something clicked…
So… what was actually missing?
From everything I could get my hands on, I kept circling back to one idea.
INFPs don’t lack logic. We lack access to it when emotions are loud.
Our dominant function, Introverted Feeling (Fi), shapes how we move through life. We decide based on what feels aligned, ethical, meaningful. That’s our strength and unfortunately also our blind spot.
Pulao over biryani? Absolutely (kindly stop judging) My friends? The prettiest and I’d kill anyone who tries to hurt them. My writing? …Maybe I’m not good enough.
We INFPs are either all in or completely withdrawn. There’s passion or there’s protest. Rarely anything in between (sad? I know)
And here is the antagonist, Te i.e. extraverted thinking, which sits quietly in the background. Fourth place. The inferior function. Structure, objectivity, execution, evidence. Not absent… just underused.
And having Te as an inferior function doesn’t mean we’re incapable of being rational. It just means logic isn’t our first language. We can speak it… but usually only after feelings have had their say (too late… :P)
So… Maybe I wasn’t “too sensitive.” Maybe I wasn’t being deliberately undervalued. Maybe I was reacting from an undeveloped Te.
Before I could move forward, I needed to know what that actually looks like… in real life, not just in theory.
So here’s what I found. And while reading this, I couldn’t help but wince… because some of it felt uncomfortably familiar.
When Te is still immature (and loudly insecure)
This part hits harder. Because when Te is underdeveloped, self-worth quietly attaches itself to reputation. Ahh 💀
You want to look capable. Put-together. Intelligent. And the moment that image is threatened, anxiety floods in.
Failure doesn’t feel like feedback… it feels like exposure.
So you avoid structure. Avoid rules. Avoid anything that demands consistency.
Planning feels restrictive. Processes feel suffocating. And the second something stops feeling good, you want out.
There’s also an exhausting amount of self-consciousness.
You’re less focused on doing the work and more focused on how you’re being perceived while doing it.
Do I look stupid? Do they think I don’t know enough? Should I pretend I’ve got this?
And instead of learning openly, you hesitate. Overthink. Or disappear altogether (iykyk)
So, basically a lot of my emotional pain wasn’t coming from the situation itself. It was coming from how personally I interpreted everything, without checking it against reality.
How does the ‘More Grown-Up’ Te looks?
You start looking outward instead of spiraling inward.
Instead of trying to figure everything out alone like replaying conversations, inventing meanings, exhausting yourself, you reach for frameworks. You Google. You read. You ask. You accept help.
There’s less “I should already know this” and more “someone has probably done this before.”
You also speak more clearly. Not louder. Not harsher. Just… clearer.
You stop running every sentence through ten emotional filters. You stop worrying whether honesty sounds rude. You say what you mean, and you mean what you say.
There’s patience too, YES, the kind that doesn’t feel exciting.
You stop craving immediate emotional relief and start tolerating slow progress. You don’t just romanticize the beginning or obsess over the end. You stay with the middle. The boring part. The process.
And perhaps most importantly, you begin to judge situations more objectively. Not coldly. Just fairly.
You look at outcomes. Systems. Effort. Evidence. Not tone. Not vibes. Not how something made you feel in that exact moment.
How to move from the underdeveloped stage to having a mature Te as a function??!!
Through all my digging, three things stood out to me… not as magic fixes, but as gentle directions. I’m not an expert. I’m not “there” yet. But these are the practices I’m choosing to try.
Not perfectly. Just honestly.
First, learning to sit with process and especially when it’s boring. Not quitting just because the excitement fades and letting discipline exist even when motivation doesn’t.
Second, being careful with memory. Not every past moment deserves to be replayed. Not every emotion needs to be relived. Sometimes, not holding on is an act of self-respect.
Third, allowing myself to be seen as unfinished. Admitting when I don’t know. Letting go of the need to appear capable all the time. Trusting that learning out loud is safer than pretending in silence.
I don’t know if this will fix everything. I don’t know if I’ll stop overthinking overnight.
But I do know this: Understanding why I feel the way I do gives me room to breathe (sigh)
If you’re on a similar journey like me… feeling deeply, questioning your worth, wondering why emotions derail your days… listen… you’re not broken either. Maybe you’re just learning how to balance heart with structure.
This is me, Rimsha, writing for the first time. Unsure. Reflective. Still figuring it out. But hopeful.
And for now, that feels like enough.
Thanks for reading 🫶🏼
