There is a version of you that never got to exist.

She might have had different dreams, or perhaps the same dreams but more space to pursue them. She made different choices not because she was braver, but because life hadn’t yet presented her with the opportunities that yours have.

You catch glimpses of her sometimes. In a song that takes you somewhere else. In a moment of quiet when the house is finally still. In a conversation that makes you think, I used to want that. Past tense. And the past tense is what stings.

This is the grief no one names in midlife.

We talk about the body changing, the relationships shifting, the identity that feels like a coat you’ve been wearing for someone else. We don’t often talk about the mourning. The quiet, complicated ache for the life that ran parallel to this one. The one where you said yes when you said no. Where you left when you stayed. Where you chose yourself a little earlier.

I don’t think this grief makes you ungrateful. Your life is real and full and yours. Grief doesn’t wait for permission, and it doesn’t need your life to be bad to show up. It just needs you to be honest.

Somewhere in midlife, most women start getting honest.

The dreams you deferred don’t disappear; they go underground, and they wait. Then one morning, usually without warning, they surface. Not as regret exactly, but more like a reckoning. A gentle but insistent question: What did I set down that still belongs to me?

That question is not a crisis, but an invitation.

Acknowledging the woman you almost became doesn’t mean abandoning the woman you are. It means bringing her into the room, sitting with her, and giving her the dignity of being seen instead of silenced.

She deserved that, and so do you.

Some of what she wanted is still available to you. Not in the same form, not on the same timeline, but available. And some of it is simply gone, and that part needs to be grieved properly. Not spiraled into, not weaponized against yourself; just felt, released, and honored.

You are not behind. You are not too late. You are a woman who carried a great deal for a very long time, and you are only now setting the bags down long enough to look around.

What you find there might surprise you.

Something quieter and more sustaining than either a clean answer or the finish line.

Yourself.

Still here.

Still wanting things.

Still worth the asking.
