Why Modern Data Engineers Need to Think Like Platform Engineers

When I first started studying data engineering, I believed the job mainly involved writing SQL queries and building ETL pipelines. Recently, I’ve noticed that the role is expanding much further. More organizations are treating data platforms as products that need to be scalable, secure, observable, and easy for internal teams to use.

This means data engineers are increasingly expected to think like platform engineers. Instead of building one-off pipelines, they create reusable infrastructure, automate deployments, monitor system health, and implement governance by default. The focus is shifting from simply moving data to building platforms that allow others to work efficiently.

I think this is one of the biggest changes happening in the industry. Technical skills remain important, but understanding reliability, automation, and user experience is becoming equally valuable.

Learning this has changed how I approach projects. Instead of asking, “Does this pipeline work?” I now ask, “Will this pipeline still work reliably six months from now?”
