RK3568 vs RK3588Which Embedded Board Is Better?

Choosing between the RK3568 and RK3588 isn’t a question of which is “better” in the abstract. It’s about matching silicon to workload. Both SoCs run Linux well, both have real ecosystem support, and both ship on dozens of boards. But they sit in different performance tiers, draw different power, and carry meaningfully different price tags. Pick wrong, and you either leave capability on the table or waste BOM cost and thermals you never needed.

Spec Comparison

The Silicon

The RK3568 is a quad-core Cortex-A55 chip. The A55 is an efficiency core — not fast in absolute terms, but dense, cool, and power-frugal. Paired with a Mali-G52 GPU and a 1 TOPS NPU, it handles 4K H.265 decode, dual display output, PCIe 3.0 ×1, USB 3.0, and SATA. Solid mid-range I/O. Mainline Linux support has matured well; Buildroot and Yocto BSPs are readily available.

The RK3588 is a different class. Four Cortex-A76 cores at up to 2.4 GHz paired with four A55s in a big.LITTLE configuration. The A76 microarchitecture delivers roughly 2–3× the IPC of the A55 at the same frequency — that’s not marketing copy, it’s a pipeline width difference. Add a Mali-G610 MP4 GPU, a 6 TOPS NPU, up to 32 GB LPDDR5, PCIe 3.0 ×4, and 8K video decode, and you have something that genuinely competes with entry-level x86 embedded platforms at a fraction of the power.

Conclusion

The RK3568 is a mature, efficient, well-priced SoC for mainstream embedded Linux work. It does the job cleanly without over-engineering the solution.

The RK3588 is a genuine performance leap — worth every dollar of its premium when the workload demands it, wasteful when it doesn’t.

Don’t spec the RK3588 because the datasheet looks impressive. Spec it because your application will actually exercise what it provides. Otherwise, the RK3568 runs cooler, costs less, and ships with a more stable BSP. Pick the right tool. That’s the job.
