Padding vs No Padding — How It Changes Your Dashboard UX

Use of Padding
Overview
- Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate
- Prerequisites: Familiarity with Layout Container structure in Tableau
- Tool: Tableau Desktop Pro, Public, Web Authoring
- Setup Time: 5–10 mins
What Your Clients Will Notice
When you master padding and spacing:
- Your dashboards look tidy and intentional — not like things were just dragged in
- Users find it easier to scan and focus (which matters for executives and stakeholders)
- You’ll stand out to clients who appreciate design — especially those coming from PowerPoint or Figma workflows
Padding is subtle, but it’s the difference between “This is good” and “Wow, this is clean.”
Step 1: Understand the Container Structure
To use padding well, you need to be using Layout Containers (Vertical or Horizontal).
If you’re just dragging objects loosely onto the canvas, spacing will be inconsistent and harder to control.
Step 2: Add Padding Thoughtfully

- Click the object (Text, Chart, container, etc.)
- On the Layout pane, adjust Inner/Outer Padding (Top, Bottom, Left, Right)
Common values:
- 8 px = subtle
- 16 px = balanced
- 24 px+ = spacious, modern
Add a bit more on top/bottom for text blocks, less for KPIs or charts. Keep it consistent!
When NOT to Use Padding
- For KPI tiles that are meant to align edge-to-edge
- When the container already has margin or border spacing
- When your layout uses nested containers with outer padding
Avoid over-padding. It can create unwanted scroll or make content feel disconnected.
Pro Tip: Use Blank Objects for Visual Breathing Room
Sometimes, instead of using padding, you can insert a Blank object between elements to create clear separation. Especially helpful when stacking:
- Sections
- Headers and visuals
- Filters and charts
Using padding smartly in Tableau or any other BI tool gives your dashboards a polished, product-grade feel.
It’s not about just making things pretty — it’s about creating comfort, clarity, and confidence for your client’s users.
