Read Optimized Custom SQL Pools

There is a thing almost hidden away ‘Optimize for reads’ .

So does it actually do anything?

In my tests, I am using a TPC-H 10TB dataset (same dataset for all queries) and the queries are all the same in the same order. .

The table below shows two runs, a Custom SQL Pool set to 100% with ‘Optimize for reads’ enabled, the other run I disabled it.

Conclusion:

The improvement on the between read optimized and non-read optimized 10TB dataset was significant. But this test is somewhat artifical as by default optimized for read is already enabled.

(I am not worried about the performance of each query, just the relative performance between the two runs)

From my testing on a 1TB dataset — I will update on my findings. But just like everything, your results will vary.
