A True Crime Story from India: The 2008 Aarushi Talwar Murder Case

One of India’s most haunting and controversial murder cases, the Aarushi Talwar case remains a chilling reminder of how a single night can shatter a family and divide a nation.

The Crime

On May 16, 2008, in Noida (a suburb of Delhi), 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar was found dead in her bedroom. Her throat had been slit. What made the case even more horrifying was the discovery of a second victim just hours later — Hemraj, the family’s domestic helper, was found dead on the terrace with similar injuries.

The victims were Aarushi, a bright schoolgirl preparing for her board exams, and Hemraj, a young Nepali domestic worker who had worked for the family for years.

The Investigation & Accusations

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) launched a high-profile investigation. The case took a shocking turn when Aarushi’s own parents — Dr. Rajesh Talwar and Dr. Nupur Talwar — became the primary suspects. Both were successful dentists.

The parents walked free after spending years in prison.
