Maybe We Were Never Meant to Think This Much
There is a particular kind of tiredness that comes from never fully relaxing your mind.
Not the kind sleep fixes. Not the kind that disappears after a weekend out or a short vacation. The kind where, even while watching a movie or replying to friends, part of your brain is still somewhere else entirely. Replaying something you said three days ago. Wondering whether you disappointed someone. Checking your phone again, not because a notification arrived, but because your mind quietly convinced you that maybe you missed something important.
Most of the people live like this.
We joke about it online because humour makes heavy things easier to carry. We laugh about having “thirty tabs open” in our brains and turn emotional exhaustion into memes because it feels lighter that way. But beneath all the scrolling and noise is a quieter truth many people rarely admit out loud: a lot of us have forgotten what it feels like to mentally rest.
Even silence feels occupied at times.
The moment life slows down, thoughts rush in to fill the empty space. Thoughts about money, relationships, careers, the future, and the quiet fear that everyone else is somehow moving ahead faster than we are. A person can be lying awake at two in the morning, exhausted beyond words, and still unable to convince their mind to slow down for even five minutes.
But perhaps the problem is not that people care too much. Perhaps the problem is that modern life rarely teaches people how to care for themselves with the same gentleness they offer everyone else.
What makes it lonelier is how normal it all looks from the outside. People still show up to classes. Still laugh at dinner tables. Still post smiling photographs online. Still answer, “Yeah, I’m fine,” while carrying entire storms in private.
And honestly, there is something quietly admirable about that too. About people continuing to move through ordinary life while fighting battles nobody else can see.
The modern world teaches people how to stay busy, but not how to sit peacefully with themselves. Perhaps peace does not begin with becoming a completely different person. Maybe it begins with speaking to yourself more kindly on the days your mind feels heavy. With understanding that resting is not weakness, slowing down is not failure, and needing a moment to breathe does not make you incapable.
Maybe some days were never asking us to be stronger at all.
Maybe they were only asking us to slow down long enough to hear ourselves again.
