It’s a line most of us have seen countless times on ATMs and point-of-sale machines. The message sounds reassuring — a system actively working to protect something personal and sensitive. But the moment a user starts interacting with that keypad, the experience often contradicts the promise.

Entering a PIN is one of the most habitual interactions in digital finance. Over time, it becomes almost automatic. Our fingers remember the positions of numbers better than our conscious mind does. The action is quick, confident, and largely invisible — which is exactly how good design should feel.

Shuffled keypads disrupt this learned behavior.

Instead of a smooth, muscle-memory-driven interaction, users are forced into a cognitive task. Each digit requires visual scanning. Fingers hesitate. Eyes move back and forth across the keypad. What was once a two-second interaction now stretches longer, especially in public spaces where pressure and distractions are high.

This shift has consequences.

The Irony of Observability

The primary justification for shuffled keypads is to prevent shoulder surfing — the risk of someone nearby observing and memorising a PIN. But in practice, the shuffled layout often creates the opposite effect.

When users slow down, hesitate, and visually search for numbers, they reveal more behavioural signals. Eye movement patterns, pauses between digits, and finger trajectories become easier to observe. The increased interaction time gives onlookers more opportunity to infer the input.

By breaking muscle memory, the system unintentionally makes the interaction more legible to others.

Security mechanisms that rely on user confusion can be counterproductive. True protection should reduce observable behavior, not amplify it.

Shifting the Burden to the User

From a UX standpoint, shuffled PINs represent a broader design pattern: shifting system responsibility onto the user.

Instead of the system handling security invisibly, the user is asked to adapt, slow down, and mentally compensate. This increases cognitive load in environments that are already stressful — queues behind you, transaction timeouts, public visibility, and the fear of making a mistake.

The result is a subtle erosion of confidence. Users don’t feel protected; they feel tested.

This is especially problematic in financial contexts, where trust, speed, and clarity are essential. When a security feature causes anxiety or hesitation, it undermines the very trust it aims to build.

Security vs. Human Behavior Is a False Trade-off

This isn’t an argument against security. Financial systems absolutely require strong protection mechanisms. But framing usability and security as opposing forces is a false dichotomy.

Human-centered security design acknowledges how people actually behave. It respects habits, motor memory, and contextual pressures. It asks:

  • Can protection happen without conscious effort from the user?
  • Can we reduce exposure without increasing cognitive load?
  • Can the system absorb complexity instead of pushing it onto humans?

Solutions that balance these concerns exist — from smarter obfuscation techniques to context-aware input methods and hardware-level protections. The challenge isn’t feasibility; it’s intent.

Designing for Dignity

At its core, good UX design is about dignity.

Users should not feel clumsy performing tasks they’ve mastered. They should not feel watched, rushed, or unsure while accessing their own money. Security should operate quietly in the background, enabling confidence rather than interrupting it.

The best security features are often the ones users barely notice — because they align seamlessly with human behavior instead of fighting it.

Shuffled PIN keypads are a small interaction, but they reveal a larger issue: what happens when we design for threats instead of for people.

Sometimes, the most telling design failures aren’t found in complex systems, but in everyday moments we’ve learned to tolerate.
