THE ANTI-RACIST DEFINITION OF ANTISEMITISM

DEFINITION…

Antisemitism is a hatred of the Jewish people, simply because they’re Jews.

EXAMPLES…

ONE: ENCOURAGING OR ENGAGING IN ACTS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST JEWS

Inciting, aiding, planning, promoting or participating in physical attacks on Jewish people, simply because they’re Jews. Joining, supporting or defending groups that seek to harm Jewish people, simply because they’re Jews. Justifying attacks that were committed against Jewish people, simply because they were Jews.

TWO: DISCRIMINATING AGAINST JEWS

Treating Jewish people differently, simply because they’re Jews. Refusing to employ a Jewish worker, vote for a Jewish politician, accept a Jewish student, or house a Jewish tenant — or engage with a Jew in any other way — simply because they’re Jews. Participating in “Jewish boycotts” — boycotting Jewish-owned and Jewish-run firms, simply because they’re owned and managed by Jews. Participating in “Jew bans” — refusing memberships or entry to Jews, simply because they’re Jewish. Forcing Jews to convert to a different religion. Removing them from a country or region if they refuse to convert, or for any other reason.

THREE: USING ANTI-JEWISH STEREOTYPES OR DEROGATORY TERMS

Making mendacious, dehumanising, or demonising allegations about Jewish people. Suggesting there’s a single “Jewish community”, which shares a common politics — that all Jews are communist, capitalist, financiers, swindlers, greedy, miserly, members of the Illuminati, or prone to complaining — or making any negative generalisation. Spreading the myth that Jews control governments, economies, the media, or any other part of society. Speaking of a “Jewish conspiracy” or “Cultural Marxism”. Accusing Jews of consuming human blood. Blaming Jews for the crucifixion of Christ. Drawing exaggerated images of Jews with hooked or oversized noses, beady eyes, drooping eyebrows, arched spines or overactive hands. Giving legitimacy to talk of the “Jewish Question” or the “Fourteen Words”. Chanting slogans such as “Jews will not replace us”, “All Jews to the gas”, “Kill the Jews”, or “Sieg Heil”. Calling a Jewish person a “Judas”, “Kike”, “Heeb”, “Hymie”, “Scrooge”, “Sheeny” — or any other derogatory term.

FOUR: HOLOCAUST DENIAL, HOLOCAUST REVISIONISM, OR DEFENDING THE NAZIS’ CRIMES

Denying the fact, scope, scale, mechanisms or intentionality of the Nazi genocide — known as the Holocaust and the Shoah. Celebrating the fact that six-million Jews were murdered. Calling for more Jews to be sent to the gas chambers. Adopting names that pay homage to the Nazis, such as the “Auschwitz Company” or the “Mengele Squad”. Legitimising the Nazis, such as by saying “Hitler was correct”. Imitating the Nazis, such as by tattooing numbers onto people’s arms. Championing policies that were invented by the Nazis, such as “Lebensraum”. Using Nazi branding, such as their version of the swastika. Using terms such as “Holohoax”.

FIVE: ASSOCIATING ZIONISM WITH THE JEWISH PEOPLE

Suggesting that all Jews are Zionists, all Zionists are Jews, Jews are responsible for the atrocities Israel performs, Zionism is “the national liberation movement of the Jewish people”, or Israel is the “Jewish State”. Assuming someone is a Zionist because they’re a Jew, or assuming that someone is a Jew because they’re a Zionist. Using the word “Jew” when speaking about Zionists, using the word “Zionist” when speaking about Jews, or using words such as “Jewish” when branding a Zionist organisation. Defending Zionism or Israel by misrepresenting Jewish scripture, by exploiting the Jewish people’s connection to the Holy Land, or by appropriating Jewish symbols. Calling Israel the “Jewish homeland” — implying that Jews with homes in other lands are disloyal — that they long to “return” to Israel, or that they answer to Israeli politicians.

SIX: SUPPORTING ANY ASPECT OF THE ZIONIST IDEOLOGY THAT ENDANGERS JEWISH PEOPLE

Supporting, defending or denying Israel’s crimes — including its use of ethnic cleansing, genocide and apartheid — behaviour that can incite hatred against Jewish people. Supporting Israel because you believe its existence will bring about Armageddon, and the deaths of millions of Jews. Supporting Israel for imperialistic reasons — using it as a proxy to spread Western values, or as a military outpost — relegating Israeli Jews to the status of political pawns. Supporting the use of Israeli Jews as human shields — placing military installations near their homes, relocating them to dangerous locales, conscripting them into the IDF, or endangering their lives in military campaigns.

SEVEN: ABUSING ANTI-RACIST JEWS

Delegitimising, excluding, silencing, ignoring, intimidating, threatening, attacking or murdering Jews who oppose Zionism — or denying them entry into an organisation or a nation. Denying Jews their right to oppose Zionism — to compare Israel to Nazi Germany, to challenge Israel’s “right to exist”, to condemn Israel’s behaviour, or to support boycotts of Israel. Purging anti-Zionist Jews from political parties, universities, workplaces or other institutions. Creating lists of anti-Zionist Jews, and calling for those Jews to be blacklisted, ostracised, arrested, deported or fired. Creating and maintaining “Jewish communal institutions” that do not include anti-Zionist representatives. Claiming to speak on behalf of all the Jewish people, without expressing the views of anti-Zionist Jews. Calling anti-Zionist Jews a “fringe minority” or “extremists” — suggesting they’re all “hard left” or “ultra-Orthodox”. Calling them “Antisemites”, “AsAJews”, “Bad Jews”, “Fake Jews”, “Goy”, “Goyim”, “Jew-ish”, “Kapos”, “Mauschel”, “Self-hating”, “Sheigetz”, “The wrong sort of Jews”, “Traitors”, “un-Jews” — or any other derogatory term.

EIGHT: MAKING FRAUDULENT ACCUSATIONS OF “ANTISEMITISM”

Crying ‘Wolf’ — falsely accusing people of antisemitism, to delegitimise them and their movements — hampering the fight against genuine Jew-hate. Arguing that anyone who opposes Zionism is antisemitic, or that they support groups such as Hamas. Suggesting that boycotts of Israel, opposition to Zionism or attacks on Zionists are motivated by a hatred of Jews. Accusing people of being antisemitic if they deny that Israel has a unique “right to exist”, or if they compare the Israeli regime to the Nazis. Branding yourself as a campaigner against antisemitism to justify your attacks on anti-Zionists. Creating, joining or having relations with any organisation that weaponises or exaggerates antisemitism for political gain.

NINE: USING EUGENICS TO DISCRIMINATE AGAINST JEWS, OR TO MAKE THE CASE FOR ZIONISM

Suggesting there’s a “Jewish race”. Placing the “Jewish race” in a hierarchy of races. Ranking Jewish populations based on the perceived quality of their genes. Championing antisemites who discriminate against Jews on the basis of their “race”. Engaging in anti-Jewish separatism — arguing that members of the “Jewish race” must be kept apart from members of other “races”. Taking steps to preserve the “purity of Jewish blood” — by stopping Jews from marrying non-Jews, Jewish converts, or members of different Jewish populations — or by opposing Jewish assimilation. Claiming that all Jews descend from the Jews of Judea, thereby delegitimising converts and their descendants. Arguing that Jews have “inferior human material”, “inferior genes”, or that they’re the “weakest of the weak”.

TEN: DISCRIMINATING AGAINST SPECIFIC JEWISH DENOMINATIONS OR POPULATIONS

Refusing to recognise specific Jewish denominations, such as the Reform Jews or the Masorti. Targeting the Haredim — calling them “Bloodsuckers”, “Draft dodgers”, “Dustbin burners”, “Freeloaders”, “Parasites”, a “Threat” — or any other derogatory term. Denying that members of a Jewish population, such as the Kaifeng or Igbo Jews, are actually Jewish. Pressuring those Jews to “convert” to Judaism. Denying the existence of the Arab Jews, denying they had homelands in the Arab world, or suggesting they all longed to move to Israel. Treating a group of Jews, such as the Beta Israel or the Arab Jews, as second-class citizens — creating systems which give them a lower quality of education, more precarious work, less representation, and lower incomes. Forcing them to adopt new identities, appearances, languages, customs, religious practices, or forms of education. Spraying them with chemicals, detaining them in camps, subjecting them to dangerous levels of X-ray radiation, confiscating their babies, or forcing them to have contraceptive injections. Calling them “Backward”, “Barbarous”, “Crazy Jews”, “Hardened criminals”, “Hustlers”, “Inferior”, “Pimps”, “Primitive”, “Savage”, “Uncivilised”, “Unevolved”, “Unhygienic”, “Unintelligent”, “un-Jewish”, “Unnatural”, “Whores”, “Wild” — or any other derogatory term.

ELEVEN: DISCRIMINATING AGAINST THE DIASPORA JEWS

Attempting to “liquidate” or “eliminate the Diaspora” — to force Jews to move to Israel — by encouraging antisemitism to abound in other nations, building alliances with antisemitic entities, selling weapons to Jew-hating regimes, or taking steps to prevent Jews from moving to alternative destinations. Comparing Diaspora Jews to prisoners. Arguing that they’re inferior and/or superior to their non-Jewish compatriots, that they’re incapable of assimilating into cosmopolitan societies, that they lose their integrity when they do assimilate, that their presence inspires Jew-hatred, that they’re perpetual victims, that they’re “miserable”, or that they should all convert. Arguing that Diaspora Jews are too feeble to achieve “self-determination”, avoid persecution, or fulfil their potential. Denying that Jews can have homelands in nations other than Israel. Downgrading Diaspora Jews to the status of “human material”. Censoring information that could save their lives. Calling them “Alien”, “Ghostlike”, “Marranos”, “Panicky”, “Parasitic”, “Shuttlecocks”, “Slovenly”, “Stiff-necked”, “Strangers”, “Unhappy”, “Weak”, “Wretched” — or any other derogatory term.
