Should You Actually Buy the Detach Card? An Honest Answer for 7 Types of People

I’m not going to tell you it fixes everything. Here’s who it actually helps — and who should look elsewhere.

I get asked this a lot now, usually by people who’ve read one of my other articles and landed on the same honest question: is the $9.99 card actually worth it, or is it just a nicely marketed piece of plastic?

Fair question. So instead of giving you a generic pitch, here’s an honest breakdown by situation. Find yourself in the list. Some of these end with “buy it.” Some don’t.

1. You Work From Home and Your Phone Is Always in Reach

This is the single strongest use case there is. When your phone lives on the same desk as your work, distraction isn’t occasional — it’s structural. The card works here specifically because it forces physical separation in an environment with none built in.

Verdict: Buy it. Put the card in another room during work hours. This is the exact scenario Detach was built to solve.

2. You’ve Tried Apple’s Screen Time and Kept Tapping “Ignore Limit”

If you’ve been down this road, you already know the problem isn’t awareness. You know exactly how much you’re using your phone. The issue is that Screen Time offers a one-tap exit at the exact moment your resistance is at its lowest.

Verdict: Buy it. The card removes that exit entirely. This is the second-strongest use case after remote work.

3. You Only Struggle With Your Phone Occasionally

If your phone use is genuinely mild — you notice it, you course-correct within a day or two, it doesn’t affect your work or sleep — you may not need a physical intervention at all. Free software-based tools like ScreenZen or the free tier of One Sec might be enough friction for you.

Verdict: Try the free app first. If a week of free blocking doesn’t hold, then the card becomes worth it. Don’t buy hardware to solve a problem software might already fix.

4. You’re a Student Trying to Study Without Distraction

Multitasking between phone use and study time has been shown to substantially reduce retention and output — the same mechanism that hurts workplace productivity hits studying even harder, because the material is unfamiliar and requires more sustained attention to absorb.

Verdict: Buy it. Leave the card in a different room during study blocks. Students consistently report this is one of the highest-impact use cases because the cost of distraction compounds directly into grades.

5. You’re a Parent Hoping This Fixes Your Teenager’s Phone Habit

I want to be honest here because this is where I’ve seen people buy the card with the wrong expectation. Detach the blocks apps on the device it’s installed on, activated by whoever holds the card. It is not a remote parental monitoring tool, and it won’t work if your teenager simply refuses to use it or has access to a second device.

Verdict: It can help, but manage your expectations. It works well as a tool a teenager chooses to use on themselves — many actually do, once they understand the “walk to unblock” mechanic gives them control rather than taking it away. It is not a surveillance solution, and if that’s specifically what you need, look elsewhere.

6. You Already Own a Brick, Blok, or Similar Device

If you already have a physical NFC blocker that’s working for you, there’s no compelling reason to buy a second one. The mechanic is fundamentally the same — tap to block, walk to unblock.

Verdict: Skip it. Save your money. If your current device is genuinely working, switching wastes both.

7. You’re Skeptical That a $9.99 Card Can Actually Do Anything

This is the most common hesitation, and it’s a reasonable one. A slim piece of plastic doesn’t look like it should be capable of much.

Here’s the honest answer: the card itself does nothing technical. It’s an NFC trigger — the same technology in a hotel key card or a tap-to-pay terminal. The actual blocking happens through the free app, at the system level, the same layer Apple uses for parental controls. The card’s entire value is psychological and physical — it turns unblocking from a one-second tap on your phone into a deliberate walk across a room.

That distinction is the entire product. If that sounds like a meaningful difference to you, it is worth $9.99. If it sounds like a gimmick, you’re allowed to be skeptical — plenty of people are, right up until they try it for a week.

Verdict: The skepticism is fair. The only way to actually resolve it is a seven-day trial.

The Honest Summary

Buy it if your phone lives within arm’s reach of your work, if you’ve already burned out on software-only blockers, or if you’re a student trying to protect study time.

Skip it if your distraction is mild, if you already own a similar device, or if what you actually need is parental monitoring rather than a self-directed tool.

I built this to solve a specific problem I had. It doesn’t solve every problem everyone has. If you land in one of the “buy it” categories above, getdetach is where you’ll find it — free app, $9.99 card, no account required.

If you land in one of the “skip it” categories, I’d rather tell you that honestly than sell you something that sits in a drawer unused.
