[Psychological Evolution] Why You Understand the “Logic” but Still Can’t Heal: The ARMOUR Framework — A Process-Based (PBT) Revolution
Chapter 1: The “Copernican Revolution” of Psychology — What is PBT?
In traditional psychology, when we feel pain, dysfunction, or despair, the medical system is accustomed to giving us a “name”: Depression, Anxiety, Borderline Personality, or PTSD. It’s like pinning a label on a map to tell you, “You are here.”
However, many people, after receiving their labels, taking medication, or even undergoing years of counseling, still let out a long sigh: “I understand the logic, but I’m just not getting better.” This is why the emergence of PBT (Process-Based Therapy) is regarded as a revolution.
From “Diagnosis” to “Process”: You Aren’t Broken, You’re Stuck
Steven Hayes, a central figure in PBT and the founder of ACT, argues that we should stop diagnosing “diseases” and start diagnosing “processes.”
Imagine your psychological state not as a static “container” filled with depression or anxiety, but as a dynamic ecosystem. When a certain plant overgrows in a forest or a water source is cut off, the system loses balance. PBT’s job is not to name the forest “Wilt Syndrome,” but to observe where the energy is blocked and where the cycle is stuck.
It no longer asks, “What disease do you have?” but instead asks: “What ‘process’ is your mind undergoing? At this moment, what forces are pulling at you, preventing you from moving forward?”
The Evolutionary Perspective: Variation, Selection, and Retention
PBT’s most rigorous theoretical foundation is the Extended Evolutionary Meta-Model (EEMM). It suggests that a healthy soul must possess mechanisms similar to biological evolution:
- Variation: When the environment changes, can you generate new thoughts, feelings, and reactions?
- Selection: Among many reactions, can you pick the one that is most helpful (functional) for you at this moment?
- Retention: Can you keep this beneficial reaction and solidify it into a long-term life trait?
When these three mechanisms rotate fluidly, a person is flexible; when the links break, one falls into pathological rigidity.
The Theoretical Dilemma: Why is PBT So Hard to Grasp?
Despite its fascinating logic, PBT faces immense difficulties in execution. For beginners or even professional therapists, it feels like a “Boeing 747 Engineering Manual” full of parts:
- Too Abstract: Foundational theories explain human nature using “evolutionary science” — rigorous, but lacking a “felt sense” for those in pain.
- Lack of Navigation: It gives you six dimensions (Affect, Cognition, Self, Attention, Motivation, Behavior) but doesn’t tell you which one to move first when your heart is breaking.
- Complex Implementation: To pursue academic “de-labeling,” it refuses to provide simple scales, requiring you to calculate complex dynamic networks like a supercomputer on the spot.
The reality is awkward: PBT gave us the most powerful compass, but it didn’t give us a map we could actually read.
This is why we need the ARMOU℞ Framework. If PBT is the deep underlying code, ARMOU℞ is the intuitive user interface, helping us translate evolutionary principles into concrete “vitality tuning.”
Chapter 2: The Three Gears of Psychological Evolution
Why do some people grow new strength from trauma, while others remain trapped in the past? To revitalize a withered psychological ecosystem, these three core gears must turn:
- Variation: Breaking Rigid Inertia — The first step of evolution is “generating difference.” When the environment changes (loss of love, failure, bereavement), if you continue to repeat old patterns of thought and reaction, the system will suffocate. Without variation, there is no turning point.
- Selection: Orienting Toward Beneficial Paths — Not all new attempts are useful. Evolution requires a screening mechanism to pick the reaction that is most “functional” for you in that moment — choosing the path that stops the bleeding and gives you the strength to move forward.
- Retention: Consolidating Healing Outcomes — The hardest part isn’t change; it’s “maintaining change.” The final step is to solidify those beneficial choices into part of your personality through repetition, allowing the brain to form new neural circuits until the “new self” becomes instinct.
ARMOU℞: The Toolbox Driving the Gears
These three gears, while scientific, can feel cold to those suffering. The ARMOU℞ framework is the implementation sequence that drives these gears:
- Variation Group (A, R): Generating new perspectives through “Acknowledgement” and “Rationalization.”
- Selection Group (M, O): Deciding to retain self-worth and discard ineffective expectations through “Mercy” and “Obituary.”
- Retention Group (U, ℞): Locking in healing results and building psychological defenses through “Upholding” and “Restoration.”

Chapter 3: The ARMOU℞ Framework — Translating Science into “Vitality”

ARMOU℞ explores six core life forces within you. These forces activate six core actions, guiding energy from the chaos of trauma toward the reconstruction of order.
- A — Acknowledgement: Facing pain honestly and gathering true information. Healing begins by stopping the escape. It breaks the dead silence of repression.
- R — Rationalization: Seeking “evidence of innocence” and dismantling false beliefs. This is a rational intervention aimed at “distinguishing responsibility” — realizing that the pain may stem from others’ limitations or societal shackles rather than personal failure.
- M — Mercy: Terminating internal criticism and pardoning the wounded self. Once the evidence shows “it’s not my fault,” we can rightfully stop the self-attack and reach an internal ceasefire.
- O — Obituary: Mourning failed expectations and reclaiming projected energy. You are mourning not just a relationship or achievement, but the “ideal life” illusion you projected onto them. This is how you recover energy(Libido) spent on the unattainable.
- U — Upholding:Rebuilding psychological defenses to protect inner value. After processing emotions, you must draw boundaries to prevent secondary injury, telling the world: “These evaluations are no longer allowed to enter my life.”
- ℞ — Restoration:Returning to rituals of order and prescribing an action formula. Reclaim life’s rhythm through small habits or hobbies, telling your brain: I have retaken the lead in my own life.
Chapter 4: Energy Shifts — A Dynamic Tug-of-War
Psychological healing is difficult because these six forces aren’t always in an “ideal state.” They are like faders on a mixing console, often experiencing intensity shifts or direction misplacements.
1. Intensity Shifts: From “Adaptation” to “Rigidity”
- Dysfunction Zone (Low Intensity): The system cannot connect to internal info or external facts, creating a dissociative emptiness.
- Overload Zone (High Intensity): Energy is too high, leading to emotional flooding or rational paralysis — idling on one gear without moving forward.
2. Direction Misplacement: “Friendly Fire” and “Energy Leakage”
- Inward “Friendly Fire”(Internalized Aggression) : The most destructive misplacement. The individual activates a protective mechanism but turns the defensive energy toward their own fragile self. This “internal violence” leads to systemic self-consumption.
- Outward “Functional Blurring” (Pathological Altruism) : Using energy meant for “internal soothing” to satisfy external environments or others’ expectations. You maintain a facade of “strength” while bleeding out internally.
3. The Dynamic Chain: Structural Collapse of Energy Flow
- Structural Layer Fracture: If the energy at the front end (A → R) fails to collect facts, all subsequent emotional processing is built on shifting sand.
- Buffer Layer Failure: If the internal “ceasefire” (M) isn’t reached, the system refuses to let go of the “Obituary (O)” because the internal judge would drown you the moment you release it.

Conclusion: From “Victim” to “Energy Tuner”
Understanding energy shifts and directions is not about establishing another set of harsh standards. It is about shifting from the victim perspective of “Why is this happening to me?” to the tuner perspective of “In which direction is my energy pulling?”
The essence of healing is not the pursuit of maximal strength in every force, but the pursuit of “functional balance” for the entire system.
Healing means practicing a dynamic adjustment: when we find our energy leaning too far toward a single object — causing internal bleeding — we have the power to intervene. We learn to gather information in chaos, complete mourning in the ruins, and weave fragmented experiences into a suit of armor (ARMOU℞) that is both defensive and full of life.
You are not recovering; you are evolving.
