Chaplain Lesson 15: The Struggle of Normalization
Chaplain Lesson 15: The Struggle of Normalization
Today’s lesson is a big one — because it speaks to a reality many chaplains quietly carry. When you truly have a passion for something, you study it deeply. You learn the language, the tone, the terminology, and the heart behind the work. You invest time, effort, and energy because you believe this calling is bigger than you. And after the studying, the training, the internships, the PRN jobs, and the hands-on practice… it becomes second nature. It becomes uplifting. It becomes your rhythm. It becomes your everyday life.
But with all that beauty comes one of the hardest challenges we face:
How do we take off the chaplain hat and simply be… normal?
What does normal even look like for us?
The truth is, when you are called to care, you don’t just switch it off. We carry stories. We carry trauma we’ve witnessed. We carry joy we’ve held. We carry the weight of what our communities endure — especially when so many around us can’t afford, don’t have access to, or don’t know where to find the care they need. And because we recognize that need, we often feel compelled to fill in the gaps.
So when our friends come to us about marital struggles, relationship issues, or household problems, they want their friend… but our chaplain instincts step in.
When a loved one dies, we want to be present as family… but the chaplain in us rises first.
And sometimes we forget that we, too, need care.
This morning’s lesson is simple but necessary:
Do not feel guilty for taking off your chaplaincy hat.
Every chaplain needs a reset. Every vessel needs rest. Every caregiver deserves space to simply be.
I’m reminded of Jesus — after feeding the 5,000, after pouring out, after giving everything — He sent the disciples and the crowd away. And before walking on water, He went up the mountain alone. That moment teaches us the sacred power of a holy reset… a divine restoration.
So today, give yourself permission to rest. To breathe. To be human. Let your hat sit on the rack for a day if you need to. Restoration is holy too.
