How to handle an encounter with wildlife in a national park to ensure both your safety and the animal well-being?

One of the most important rules when encountering wildlife in a national park is to respect the animals’ space. Never try to approach, feed, or provoke them just to get a better photo. Wildlife should be observed quietly from a safe distance, and it’s important to follow the instructions of your guide or park rangers at all times.

Sudden movements or loud noises can stress the animals and increase the risk of dangerous situations. During my visit to Chitwan National Park, I had two unforgettable wildlife encounters. The first was with a one-horned rhinoceros during a jeep safari.

Our guide immediately asked everyone to stay quiet and remain seated. We kept a safe distance and watched as the rhino calmly grazed before disappearing into the tall grass. Later, we were incredibly fortunate to spot a Bengal tiger resting deep inside the forest.

It was a rare and breathtaking sight that lasted only a few moments, but everyone stayed completely silent and followed the guide’s instructions. We didn’t try to get closer or make noise to attract the tiger’s attention. Instead, we simply admired this magnificent animal from a safe distance before it quietly walked back into the jungle.

These experiences reminded me that we are visitors in the animals’ home. By respecting their space and behaving responsibly, we were able to witness some of the most incredible wildlife without disturbing them.
