“This Is My Heart (Psalm 8)” by Justin DeRosa: You’re Not Too Small for God’s Attention

What happens when you stop muting His calls?

Justin DeRosa wrote “This Is My Heart (Psalm 8)” during a season of worry. His hearing was failing on his right side (doctors said ‘permanent’), and the bitterness set in fast. He admits it in the lyrics: “I muted the calls that you sent.” Sound familiar? We all mute the calls sometimes — the quiet nudges, the conviction, the invitations to trust. DeRosa’s healing came slowly.

DeRosa shares: “I don’t know if it’s gotten better or He’s allowed my brain to cope because about 6 months ago something shifted and I could hear the right side of my mixes again.” He finished a song called PARADISE and then was moved to finish this song using his daughter’s birthday Psalm 8.

DeRosa shares: “The fact that He created things so much bigger and grander than me and yet he is mindful of my human heart and condition struck me. Then He shaped the words in realtime to fit the beat and mode in a single car ride to pickup dinner for the family.” The verse that stood out for him is Psalm 8:4: “what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?”

Think about the scale of that question. The same God who flung stars into place and carved out galaxies bends down to notice your heartbreak, your diagnosis, and your 2 a.m. worry. He isn’t too big for your problems. He’s not distracted by the universe that He’s running.

So what do you do with that? Stop muting the calls. Bring God the unsaid stuff, the things you haven’t even put into words yet — DeRosa calls it “the deepest desires unsaid.” He already knows them anyway. Healing doesn’t always look like an instant fix; sometimes it looks like six quiet months and a changed heart. Trust the process, not just the outcome. You’re not invisible to Him. He is “still mindful of me.”

This one is special to me for a number of reasons. About a year and a half ago I got the news that my hearing was failing on my right side. Given my job and my passions in life this was extremely discouraging as doctors said it was likely permanent. The first half of this song is a prayer for healing and questioning what God is trying to show me through this trial. I was bitter. But GOD… I don’t know if it’s gotten better or He’s allowed my brain to cope because about 6 months ago something shifted and I could hear the right side of my mixes again. I finished PARADISE and then was moved to finish this one using my daughter’s birthday Psalm 8. The fact that He created things so much bigger and grander than me and yet he is mindful of my human heart and condition struck me. Then He shaped the words in realtime to fit the beat and mode in a single car ride to pickup dinner for the family. 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? He loves you and knows you. I’m thrilled to finally be using the desires of my heart for His kingdom. Give the song(s) a spin, add them to your summer playlists, use them to worship on your commutes. I’m thankful for healing. I’m grateful to share them with you. As long as He keeps giving me songs to sing, I’ll keep putting them out. I hope they bring you as much joy as they do for me.
