The recent live social media show by an ex-BBN winner got me thinking. The 2022 Big Brother Naija (BBN) winner won 100 Million, an SUV, and an all-expense trip to Dubai; safe to say she was made! What makes it more interesting is that the Nigerian economy was still buoyant, and the millions she won were a huge windfall at the time.

Fast forward four years, and 100 million is almost depleted, exhausted! How? As How naa?

Some people have not seen 1 million in their account balance, so to have 100 Million disbursed as prize money is like MIRACLE ALERT! Many people will have a hot take: didn’t she invest, she must be living big girl life, she must have moved to Lekki and be driving big cars. Some will even trivialize it and say things like, if she’s spending 1 Million per month, she can be sustained for 100 months (there are some people that actually think this way, not fiction, real life)

For me, I can't blame her. In the cry-fest live session, she complained bitterly about how generosity towards her family has drained her of her financial fortune. She even said her dad granted an interview with Vanguard when she didn’t meet one of his financial assistance requests. Me, I can relate to this kind of scenario, where you give so much you become exhausted and broke, yet with little appreciation. You give so much that you can’t save. I won’t give details because, like Phyna, for me, family members were also involved. Fast forward today, I’m not too financially buoyant (I’m not poor oo), but I have some business I want to set up that requires funding, equipment, and even marketing, but money is not much. But hey, my own financial woes are self-inflicted, after all, I left 9–5 to dive headfirst into the ocean of entrepreneurship. SO for me, I won’t cry on social media, I will take my L and work my way back to the top. I advise Phyna to do the same.

I guess Phyna and I also have something in common — lack of financial judgement and not being able to say NO. But really, can or should anyone ever say NO to family? Well, the aforementioned analysis might have just answered that question. But it’s not nuisance or financial advice; everybody’s case or experience is unique.

Last, Last We will all be OK. People heal, wounds cover up, and even broken bones regenerate. Even the Bible says if the tree is cut down but the stump remains, it can grow again.
