Why Botswana Keeps Copying Models It Doesn’t Understand
By Arnold Chilisa
Botswana imports startup models the way it imports slogans: enthusiastically and uncritically.
Silicon Valley playbooks. Global accelerator templates. Pitch-first logic.
This is not ambition. It is imitation without comprehension.
The Data Nobody Headlines
Quiet ecosystem tracking and post-program follow-ups suggest that over 90% of Botswana startups are inactive, irrelevant, or shut down within 24–36 months.
This mirrors broader African patterns, but Botswana hides it better.
Vanity Competitions
Founders are pushed into visibility contests instead of localization work.
Distribution is boring. Localization is slow. Vanity travels fast.
Localization Is the Strategy
Localization means:
- pricing for irregular income
- designing for low trust
- integrating with bureaucracy
Most founders avoid this because it does not win applause.
A Note on an Ongoing Debate
Some of these arguments have spilled into Facebook comment sections recently.
One of those exchanges has led to a private, offline conversation I’ll be having with an interesting young founder whose name keeps resurfacing in some of these debates.
I will write about that conversation next.
Final Thought
Botswana does not need global-sounding startups.
It needs companies that understand where they are standing.
Next
A private founder conversation — examined critically, without sentiment.
