The War Within : Humans Turn Against Humanity

We have the facts and figures across continents, across time, across headlines. What we don’t have anymore… is the capacity to feel those figures.

The world has seen over 50–60 active conflicts in the last decade, with 2024 witnessing the highest number of wars since World War II. In 2025, almost 240,000 people were killed in violent conflicts across the world. More have been displaced, starved, and forced into living a life not even remotely resembling living.

The war in Gaza has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties, including civilians. Neighbourhoods have been reduced to mere dust. Children have learned to recognize the sound of a missile before they have even learned to read. But in the meanwhile, the war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has ensured that yet another part of the world has turned into a stage for power, influence, and control. Thousands of civilians have died in the crossfire. Economies across the world have reacted in minutes. Oil prices, stock markets, strategic routes, everything has reacted.

Everything but us.

But there is something more evil in all this than the wars themselves. The wars are not destroying the world. The wars are destroying the human mind. Because something has indeed changed.

We read about the destruction while having dinner. We discuss the death tolls like they are mere facts and figures. We take sides — not based on our humanity, but our identity, our politics, or our stories. We have not only witnessed the war. We have also become psychologically accustomed to it. And that is where the real conflict begins.

Not on borders. Not on nations. But within ourselves.

The Psychological Collapse: How War Rewires the Human Mind

The war does not end when the guns fall silent. The war continues — in our nervous system, in our brains, in our behavior.

This phenomenon has been described by psychologists as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), where the brain continues to live in a state of danger even when the danger has passed.

But what happens when the entire population has to live in a state of PTSD?

According to estimates by international health organizations, 1 in 5 people in a war zone develops a mental disorder. Research has also proven that 25% of people in a war zone develop PTSD, and a similar percentage develop depression. This means millions of people are not just surviving the war. This means millions of people are carrying the war within them.

However, the damage does not end here. The damage does not end within the affected population. Because there is another form of psychological change. A change that is subtle, incremental, and much more insidious.

Desensitization.

The more we are exposed to violence, the less we respond to it. Our brain adjusts to the situation. Our brain protects itself.

We are initially shocked by the war. Then we become disturbed by the war. Then we become comfortable with the war. And then we become comfortable with the fact that the war has become normal.

This is how our humanity starts to disintegrate. Not in a devastating event. But in a process. A process that is incremental. A process that is silent.

Humans vs Humanity

There was a time when the death of innocent people evoked universal sadness. Today, it evokes a debate. There was a time when war was seen as failure. Now, it is seen as strategy. There was a time when empathy was natural. Now, it is selective. We are no longer just witnessing humans fight other humans. We are witnessing something far more disturbing: Humans fight for the destruction of humanity.

We support wars we will never fight. We justify the deaths we will never face. We accept suffering, as long as it is someone else’s. Without understanding just one simple fact: They could be us.

Because war does not discriminate like we do. War does not recognize ideology, nationality, or belief systems when it destroys. War only requires distance and indifference.

The Real Damage

The true tragedy of war is not just the death toll. The true tragedy is the mind-set we have come to accept. Trauma we cannot escape, empathy we cannot feel, suffering we cannot understand and eventually, the realization that we have come accept that ..

When death no longer offends us, When suffering no longer touches us… The war is no longer outside. The war is within.
