The Last Master of Flash?

💬 This piece is a personal reflection on building for the joy of it — a digital jukebox made in Flash over four years. Not because it was needed. But because it felt right. I’m sharing it now in the hope it inspires a new generation to slow down, play, and create without pressure.

Or: why we need to keep playing

Back in the early 2000s, I read New Masters of Flash 3 and it hit me like a spark. Not because of the techniques — but because of the stories. Makers who experimented, failed, played — and still built something beautiful. These weren’t polished apps or products. They were digital worlds filled with motion, music, and emotion.

And I thought: I want to make something like that. Not for money. Not for success. Just… because it’s fun. Because there’s magic in making things come alive.

Years later, that became my Wurlitzer MediaPlayer — a digital jukebox inspired by the iconic Wurlitzer 1015. Fully built in Flash. Everything handmade: the buttons, the lights, the rotating CD carousel. I worked on it for four years in my spare time.

Not because anyone asked for it. But because I couldn’t not make it.

By the time I finished, Flash was gone. Spotify had locked its API. The world had moved on. And still — I don’t regret a single moment.

Because during those four years, I learned more than just code or animation. I learned about patience, wonder, and the power of play. About how important it is to make things that don’t have to be “useful” — just meaningful.

I’m sharing this project not because it’s the future. But because it reminds us of something we’re slowly forgetting:

That making can still be slow, illogical, heartfelt, and fun.

And I believe that’s more important than ever — especially now. In a time when young creators are experimenting with AI, generating tools on demand, and optimizing everything for output, I want to offer something else:

A story of how learning through play, getting lost, and building with curiosity can still shape who you are.

That’s why I love sharing my experience with the next generation. As a voice from another era — but one powered by the same spark.
