Kids can’t read. They can’t do math. Discipline is nonexistent.

Classrooms feel like daycare centers with Wi-Fi. Teacher burnout is through the roof.

COVID didn’t break it — it exposed it. And nothing has improved.

Teachers, listen up: winter break isn’t downtime. It’s your window to reclaim control of your career. Plan your escape. Save your sanity.

My Story

I taught elementary, middle school, and high school in South Florida for 32 years.

Once, it was fun. Creative. Students passed their certifications. I could teach and breathe.

Then COVID hit. The cracks became chasms.

Bureaucracy crushed creativity. Testing requirements doubled. Administration refused to help students. Passing rates plummeted.

I realized: it was unsustainable.

Early in my career, jobs were scarce. I drove across Ohio, Virginia, and Georgia chasing interviews. Lesson learned: sometimes you have to go where the work is.

Your Plan B Options

Your skills are valuable. Stop settling for less.

  • Start a tutoring service — low cost, high flexibility.
  • Start or join a micro-school — control, creativity, results.
  • Teach abroad — Scandinavia, China, Korea, Japan, the Middle East. Respect. Higher pay. Fresh start.
  • EdTech roles — learn new skills, earn competitive pay.
  • Curriculum writing — leverage your expertise.
  • Freelance consulting — niche experience sells.
  • Corporate training / remote instructional design — retraining or relocation required, but worth it.
  • Or train for something completely different that fits your likes or interests.
  • Do something that helps someone else, fulfils a need, or solves a problem while maintaining your dignity and sanity.

Reality check: some transitions take 3–6 months, and financial planning is essential. Budget for retraining or relocation, and explore low-cost or remote options to ease your transition.

Winter Break Action Plan

  • Cut spending, reduce debt, and live minimally.
  • Days 1–2: decompress, vent, sleep.
  • Day 3: research alternatives.
  • Days 4–7: explore courses, retraining, and international opportunities.
  • Week 2: build a concrete exit plan.

Tough Love

Complaining changes nothing.

You’re smart. You’re an educated professional. You’re capable. And you deserve support as you consider new paths. Vent if you must-then act.

Vent if you must — then act.

Staying stuck and doing nothing about it is a trap.

No Plan B = grin and bear it.

Realism

Exiting the school system takes effort.

New skills.

Moving.

Starting small.

Nothing changes without action.

Action beats complaint every time.

No-Nonsense Closing

Winter break is your launchpad, not a pause.

Stop waiting. Stop hoping. Act.

Build your Plan B — or stay trapped.

Classrooms are collapsing. Students are disengaged. Teacher burnout is at an all-time high.

It’s brutal. It’s real.

But winter break? That’s your chance to reclaim your life, career, and sanity. Start now — or keep burning out.
