Welcome back to the Wanderlust Diaries dear readers.
You may recall from Episode 63 — As Greenland’s glaciers continue to melt — Meow 783 — where Skipper Riman, Seaspray D and Greta Thunberg had attended a meeting with Inuit people in Nuuk, Greenland, where sovereignty and world environment concerns were discussed at length.
Greta was welcomed with open arms, and spoke supportively on sovereignty issues, and the dangers of what the drill baby drillers were doing to our planet.
Just as the crew were about to board the Golden Lotus for their next destination — Iceland — Skipper Riman noticed a familiar face standing dockside — none other than Special CIA Agent, Joseph Smith.
Agent Smith had sporadically followed the Golden Lotus on its save the environment campaign trail since Tarawa, Kiribati, in the Pacific and elsewhere — specifically Kauai, Hawaii, USA, at the International Climate Change Conference — where there was an unwanted power outage — suspiciously attributed to Agent Smith.

Naturally, the Golden Lotus crew was happy to give the CIA agent the slip, as the local Inuit people performed a traditional farewell dance ceremony dockside.
Iceland was not so far away, a southerly tack to the Labrador Sea — and then north east to Reykjavik in Iceland.
However, it seemed Greta would not join the Lotus crew to Iceland, at least not all of the way, as Skipper Riman received marine radio notification from ‘Ship to Gaza Sweden,’ that a Danish fishing vessel would collect Greta from the Golden Lotus near Prins Christianssund — a small port on the south east coast of Greenland.

Gaza Flotilla organizers were initially going to collect Greta from Nuuk, but decided against it when they found out CIA Agent Joseph Smith et al were in town — and were worried they might pass on the information to Mossad agents in Tel Aviv.

Skipper Riman listened carefully to radio instructions from the Danish Fishing skipper on their boat ‘Helga,’ and before long spotted the large boat at anchorage awaiting world environmental treasure Greta.

Hugs and tears all round, Greta was handed over to the Danish crew — who may or not have been fisherman at all (in fact one of them looked like Tasmanian Queen Mary of Denmark), but indeed it seemed she was in good hands, and waves of admiration from the Golden Lotus crew farewelled the good ship Helga, as the vessel sailed south east towards Gibraltar on the Mediterranean Sea.

From there, Greta would join a yacht on its way to Barcelona to meet with other flotilla ships from Greece, Italy and Tunisia– and then collect supplies enroute in Genoa (250 metric tons of food for Gaza) and the remainder of the cargo in the Sicilian port of Catatonia.
Meanwhile, Skipper Riman and Seaspray D admired the fjord like scenery over a cup of warm cocoa — before Skipper Riman advised “anchors aweigh” — and soon the Golden Lotus was heading into an icy Nor west wind towards Iceland.

Cold bursts of sea-spray splashed over the Golden Lotus bow and beyond — forcing Skipper Riman and Seaspray D to wear oilskin protection jackets and leggings that would keep them warm and dry.
Seaspray D emerged from below deck, passed Skipper Riman a another warm cup of cocoa, and proceeded with his usual childlike curiosity inquiries.
“Besides volcanoes and geysers, what can you tell me about Iceland, Skipper,” Seaspray D inquired with the usual smiley grin, as he wiped some icicles away that had begun to form on his long beard.
Skipper Riman returned the smile, pulled the hood covering back over her head that had momentarily popped off due to a sudden wind gust, and proceeded to educate the young Australian salty sailor.
“Well, it’s a Nordic country where the Arctic and North Atlantic oceans lap its shores.
“Around a third of the 390,000 residents live in the capital Reykjavik.
“Yes, as you alluded to, its volcanically active — as it sits on a rift of tectonic plates.
“Like elsewhere in Europe, Iceland is warmed by the gulf stream - so its almost a temperate climate you might say — depending on the season.
“And it’s just 155 nautical miles from Greenland, so I’m hoping the tail wind change forecast will get us there before dusk,” Skipper Riman declared, as she wiped yet another jet of seaspray that splashed over the port bow.
Skipper Riman took a long sip from her cocoa cup, licked her large brown full lips, and continued:
“Sadly though, like elsewhere in the world, Iceland is subjected to climate change, severe glacial retreat where vegetation patterns have changed.
“Indeed, just like Greenland, the melting of Iceland’s glaciers could raise sea levels — causing erosion and flooding worldwide,” Skipper Riman concluded, just as the wind had changed to blow from the south, so changes to the mainsail in particular were needed.
And before long, there it was dear readers, the port of Reykjavik appeared through the mist ahead — and as they neared the port, it seemed there was a rock concert of sorts underway.

And the Icelandic star of the show, Bjork, was the headline act — and had sent security staff to pick up the Golden Lotus crew with free tickets to her concert show — once they had tied up and completed customs formalities.

The concert sound boomed over the city and surrounds as Bjork’s classic track — ‘Declare Independence’ belted out across the harbor:
Declare Independence
Don’t let them do that to you
Start your own currency
Make your own stamp
Protect your language
Make your own flag
Raise your flag…higher higher…
Damn colonists
Ignore their patronizing
Tear off their blindfolds
Open their eyes
Declare Independence
Don’t let them do that to you
…wow…. a fine welcome to Iceland…
…to be continued…
Meoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow for now dear readers
Until next time
