Eli Health: A Game-Changing Femtech That Visualizes Hormones and Stress at Home

I recently came across an early-stage Canadian startup called **Eli**, based in Montreal, and was intrigued by their product — so I signed up for their waitlist.

Their approach is simple yet innovative: you collect a saliva sample, and within 20 minutes, the test results are displayed. Through a mobile app, you can then track and visualize your wellness trends, including hormonal fluctuations, stress response, perimenopause, infertility risks, and more.

The team behind Eli Beta includes medical professionals, data scientists, and former Google employees — bringing together strong expertise from both healthcare and tech. The product is still in beta, but the official launch is highly anticipated.

The Link Between Stress and Hormonal Health

Stress occurs when your brain detects external stressors and triggers a cascade of physiological responses through your autonomic nervous system and endocrine system.

These stressors are first sensed by your neocortex and amygdala, which then signal the hypothalamus to release stress hormones — initiating various mind-body reactions.

There are several types of stressors:

  • Physical: temperature fluctuations, noise, poor lighting
  • Chemical: tobacco smoke, strong odors, solvents
  • Biological: viruses, flu, pollen
  • Psychosocial: work pressure, human relationships, personal goals

While mild stress can boost performance, chronic or excessive stress can lead to depression, anxiety disorders, autonomic nervous dysfunction, PTSD, and more. In women, high stress can suppress estrogen levels, leading to irregular menstruation or even amenorrhea.

Understanding Female Hormones and the Menstrual Cycle

The female reproductive system is largely regulated by two hormones: estrogen and progesterone.

Here’s how the menstrual cycle works:

Follicular Phase (Low Temperature Phase)

・FSH stimulates the development of ovarian follicles, which produce estrogen.

・Estrogen thickens the uterine lining.

Ovulation

  • A surge in LH triggers the release of an egg.

Luteal Phase (High Temperature Phase)

  • The ruptured follicle becomes the corpus luteum, secreting progesterone to prepare the uterus for implantation.

Menstruation

  • If no fertilization occurs, hormone levels drop and the uterine lining is shed.

Disruptions in this cycle can lead to anovulation, infertility, or luteal phase defects (when the high temperature phase lasts fewer than 10 days), which is often a cause of menstrual irregularities or fertility issues.

Basal Body Temperature as a Hormonal Indicator

In a healthy cycle, basal body temperature (BBT) has a clear biphasic pattern:

  • Low temperature: before ovulation (follicular phase)
  • High temperature: after ovulation (luteal phase), increasing by 0.3–0.5°C

When ovulation does not occur, the BBT pattern may be monophasic or irregular, signaling issues like ovarian dysfunction.

Why Eli Beta Matters for the Future of Femtech

What makes Eli Beta so exciting is its ability to measure hormonal and stress responses in a non-invasive, fast, and data-driven way.

✅ Real-time hormone visualization

✅ Saliva-based testing you can do at home

✅ Actionable insights on menstruation, fertility, menopause, and stress

As someone who supports innovation in digital health, I believe tools like Eli Beta could empower women to better understand and manage their bodies across various life stages.

I’m excited to see how this startup will evolve.

Final Note: Supporting Early-Stage Startups

I help startups and venture-backed companies with new business development and product strategy — especially in tech and healthcare. I also mentor early-stage entrepreneurs, helping them sharpen their ideas and move from concept to execution.
